FL Div 1: Controversy as Moynalvey and Syddan finish all square

January 28, 2019

Moynalvey's Padraic Harnan

Moynalvey and Syddan got their 2019 A league campaigns off to a start by sharing the spoils at Kilmore Park Moynalvey on Sunday morning 27th January.

Moynalvey 0-9
Syddan 0-9

Although both sides had chances to win, Moynalvey with new manager Gerry Smith at the helm for the first time and newly promoted Syddan under the guidance of former Moynalvey player Miley Byrne got their A league campaigns off to a start by picking up a point each.

Early scores for both sides came from their No. 15’s, Daire Rowe opening the visitor’s account in the 2nd minute, with Moynalvey’s Ray Ryan opening his side’s account a minute later.

A further three points in a row from Ryan, two frees and one from play, handed Moynalvey an early three-point advantage before he had to leave the field with an injury in the 15th minute.

Two Syddan points reduced the deficit to the minimum before James Weldon extended Moynalvey’s advantage to two points again. Scores remained hard to come by in the remainder of the half, with Syddan adding their 4th point just before half time, leaving Moynalvey two points to the good at the break, 0-6 to 0-4.

Within four minutes of the restart Syddan’s talisman Daire Rowe hit a brace of points to draw the sides level for just the second time. Ten minutes later Moynalvey’s Padraic Harnan pointed to retake the lead for the home side, 0-7 to 0-6.

Another brace from Rowe, the second a huge score assisted by the wind from outside the 45-yard line gave the visitors the lead for the first time,0-8 to 0-7 on the three-quarter hour mark.

Another Syddan point extended their lead to two, but two brilliantly judged points from placed balls by Padraic Harnan against a strong wind meant Moynalvey took a share of the two points on offer.

Syddan Report

SYDDAN 0-9 MOYNALVEY 0-9

SYDDAN'S first ever game in league Div 1 ended in controversy after a Daire Rowe effort from a free was waved wide by one umpire and a point by the other in Moynalvey on Sunday morning.

Despite protestations Syddan had to be content with a share of the spoils after referee Gus Martyn ruled that the ball had gone wide in the final action of the match.

The visitors led by two points entering the closing stages but intercounty player Padraic Harnan converted frees late on, with the equaliser coming two minutes into added time.

Harnan, making his return following a serious leg injury, accounted for all of Moynalvey's second half scores after they led 0-6 to 0-4 at the break.

All of Syddan's second half points came from the boot of Daire Rowe as he took his tally to seven for the hour.

Rowe opened his side's account on two minutes but by the ninth minute the hosts had raced into a 0-4 to 0-1 lead with corner forward Raymond Ryan on target with all of the Moynalvey points.

Further scores from Rowe and Gary Farrelly left the minimum between the teams before Ryan hit his fifth point and almost immediately was forced off with an injury.

Moynalvey's last point of the half came from a James Weldon free while Kevin Traynor replied at the other end on the 30 minute mark.

Rowe had the sides level at 0-6 each on 35 minutes before Harnan edged his side in front again towards the end of the third quarter.

Two further Rowe points, the second a great long range effort had Syddan ahead on 51 minutes. He then doubled the lead, again from distance, before Moynalvey's late rally levelled matters.
