Top Ref Back

(Oldest Posts First)

Great to see David gough back with the whistle. Meath referees are well known to be the top refs in the country, Reilly, colderick, gough.
But after seen some the refs at last few games that we could attend or watch tru the fence. I thought some referees fitness was shocking for such big games at senior level....
Are these lads put through any regular test or can you just sign up and become a ref.... I am not slatting refs just think there could be an improvement especially they way the game has gone in last few years....
Once again this is not a tackle at refs..

Yes it is great to see him back, But he did publicly state that he wouldn't be returning until a vaccine was available, Now we have a U turn by him and immediately steps into the senior championship. What does this signal to all the referees that stepped forward to officiate for the past 2 months. Your contribution doesn't really matter, the prodigal son has returned. What about the referee who was originally given the game. Personally as he initially withdrew he should have sat out the year.

100% I agree with you like a player been out all year then decides to walk back onto the panel....
But as far as referees goes maybe meath has 5 or 6 lads that are fit enough to ref senior champ.....

David Gough is top class referee, and yet he referees every level, I hear refereed an Under 15 Division 4 game on Tuesday evening. It's an absolute privilege to have him back refereeing. It is not as if he was off touring the world, he made a decision based on health risk, things have changed since then and he has reassessed the risks now and thankfully decided to take up refereeing again. Anyone who wants to complain about his return, have some other agenda other than wanting the best referees available refereeing the top matches.
I admire anyone who takes up the role and I am sure they all do their best but when I go to a game where David is refereeing you are pretty much guaranteed he will get all the big calls right.
Thank God David is back refereeing.

Nobody has questioned David's ability as a referee. The point I made was he stated that he would not Referee again until a vaccine was available. The numbers are higher now than when we got back playing games. Every referee was asked to make them selves available, some declined to do so for personal reasons. To walk back into the set up when we are down to the semi final stage of the championship is in my view a slap in the face to all the other referees. It was definitely a slap in the face to the referee who was awarded the game last week and at the last minute pulled out of it to allow David in. No consideration given to him or his umpires who made arrangements to be there.
As for your comment about refereeing at all levels isn't that what referees are supposed to do. Do you think they're elate and above u15 div4 games.

All,referees in county should ref at all ages just cause your on top panel doesn't mean you shouldn't ref u15 or u10s.
My opinion is that some refs are not up to senior standard.
Maybe gough back for county final....

Bit surprised at guys complaining. Good to see him back and he is the best in the country and badly needed. Some of the Refs I have seen doing senior club matches are well able to run, but I'm not sure what Ref school they went to as they blew the whistle for the slightest contact appearing to be more interested in being the center of attention. There would be more contact allowed in a basketball match.

Agreed but management and supporters have ac lot to answer for, was at Ashbourne v O Mahoneys first round and O Mahoneys supporters ( not their line by the way) never let up at the referee for the hour. Was also at Seneschalstown v Ashbourne and the Seneschalstown line and supporters were unbelievable, everytime a player was touched yoi would forgiven for thinking he was assaulted such eas the roaring. One thing about Gough is he lets the play go , no frees for slight contact. Credit to Cormac Reilly who reffed Kells V Dunboyne and did likewise

Cormac Reilly definitely best in the county let's it flow....
There is always gonna be supporters constantly roaring and abusing the ref....young joe curran did ash v senchalstown he could sent 5 more off, hes good lad coming on. It's the young lads you want you have Curran, coyle and smith all coming threw.....
Flynn slated refs few weeks ago about not letting games flow but the refs are implementing the rules some say there correct some disagree.....
