Navan O’Mahony’s 1-17 Meath Hill 2-19

On a sunny evening in Meath Hill, Navan O’Mahony’s faced a difficult challenge against the hosts, who made the stronger start and raced into a 0-6 to 0-2 lead. O’Mahony’s responded with three unanswered points from Ciaran McGuinness, Podge Gallagher and Max Farrelly, but Meath Hill finished the half strongly, including a goal, to lead 1-10 to 0-5 at the break.

Meath Hill extended their advantage early in the second half with another goal and seven minutes into the second half, fifteen points separated the sides.  O’Mahony’s showed plenty of fight to hit back with two two-pointers from Ben Forde and substitute Sean Smyth before Paul Cunningham converted a penalty. 

With fifteen minutes remaining, eight points was the deficit. Further scores from Forde, Smyth and an impressive two-pointer from Farrelly kept the scoreboard moving, but the hosts remained in control and ultimately ran out 2-18 to 1-17 winners.

In spite of the results, John Nugent’s side will be happy with the spirit they showed in the second half when facing such an uphill battle and will be left rueing missed opportunities. O’Mahony’s will now turn their attention to Walterstown, with a place in the semi-final up for grabs in their next outing.
