Ballina Stephenites' reign as Mayo senior football champions is at an end after they fell to a 1-17 to 1-10 defeat at the hands of Castlebar Mitchels in Castlebar on Friday evening.

Chasing a fourth consecutive Paddy Moclair Cup success, Ballina got a goal through David Tighe to lead by 1-2 to 0-2 after 11 minutes before home side outscored them by 0-9 to 0-4 over the next 20 minutes to lead by two when the teams went in at the break.

Castlebar went on to stretch their lead to four points ahead of Neil Douglas cementing the win with this coolly taken goal in injury-time (watch below), crashing the holders out at the competition’s group stage.

Elsewhere, hosts Aghamore denied Crossmolina Deel Rovers with a 1-14 to 0-17 draw at the death.

Goalkeeper Adam Byrne demonstrated his nerve under pressure by curling over a free deep in injury-time to secure a share of the points for Aghamore.

The other clash in the Mayo SFC yesterday saw Garrymore finish 1-12 to 0-10 winners over Balla in Garrymore, where Mayo defender Eoin McGreal netted the game’s only goal for the home side four minutes in.
