The late Declan Smith

Moynalvey paid tribute to the late Declan Smith.

Sad news broke Monday morning of the passing of a great Gael and Moynalvey community man Declan Smith who sadly lost his brave battle with illness, widely known and respected in GAA and LGFA circles within the county.

Declan, a former player with his native Cortown before transferring to Moynalvey went on to captain the Moynalvey Junior ‘C’ FC winning side of 1993 having lost out in the decider the previous year, before going on to watch his children wear the maroon & white with great pride.

Declan’s four girls Ciara, Tara, Ailíse and Aideen have all lined out for Moynalvey at various stages, with Aideen and Tara continuing to do so, while Declan’s son Donal has been a mainstay for the Moynalvey Men’s side, Donal also doubling up as club treasurer following in Declan’s footsteps as a valued club person.

Declan himself well known on the sidelines at club & county matches will be sorely missed as a great supporter and committee member of Moynalvey GFC, who also served as a former county board delegate representing the club at Meath Ladies Co. Board meetings.

Our deepest sympathies go out to his beloved wife Colette, Ciara, Tara, Donal, Ailíse, Aideen and the extended Smith and Loughnane families and Declan’s wide circle of friends at this sad time.

Rest in peace Declan, a true gentleman and great Gael taken too soon!

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam!

Cortown GFC extend our deepest sympathies to the Smith family on the passing of Declan this week. Declan a former player for Cortown, along with the Smith family have been a constant presence in the club since our formation in 1969. Our thoughts at this difficult time are with Declan's wife Colette, son, daughters, grandchildren, brothers, sisters and extended family and friends.
