Trim 0-09 Gaeil Colmcille 2-16
Gaeil Colmcille finished the week off in style defeating Trim at St. Loman’s Park despite playing 3/4s of the game with 14 men after Evan Sheridan saw red midway through the first half. An excellent balance in the first half of defence led by the experienced Jordan Muldoon and attack by the youngest player on the team Conor Óg Ferguson who Trim couldn’t get to grips with Kells playmaker.
Trim got the opening score of the game but Andrew Gormley responded with a free in his first competitive game since the U19 Championship Final after a surgery over the winter. Both sides shared the next two scores with Ajay Tormey pointing for The Gaeils kindly set up by Bruno Griffin who made a rare appearance in the forward line.
Kells pushed two clear in the 11th minute when Adam Donnelly scored what now is a customary two pointer. Two points in quick succession for the home side saw the sides level once again but Tormey got his second point of the game to regain the lead for Gaeil Colmcille.
Soon after Kells were in front again and it was their biggest lead of the match, after good work from Gormley, he cut inside the Trim defence and laid the ball off to Jordan Muldoon who finished low to find the back of the net. Evan Sheridan grabbed a two pointer from the 45 yard but that was his last action of the day.
Down to 14 players, Kells dug deep and grabbed the next two scores, the first from the left boot of John Gormley while Andrew tapped over a free in the 25th minute. Trim grabbed two points either side of another Kells two pointer, this time from Conor Óg Ferguson who claimed the mark from the kickout, raced through and hit a lovely score. Trim got the last score of the half but Kells led by eight points 1-11 to 0-06.
Oisin Reilly struck first in the second half with a point and Aaron Browne hit a two pointer soon after to open Kells lead to 11 points. With the deficit in numbers Kell’s needed the lead and Trim hit two points in a row to keep the pressure on. There was a fifteen minute gap from Kells last score and when John Gormley pointed for a second time as clock was starting to run out on Trim.
As Trim went in search for a goal, some heroic defending from Rian Early and a great save from Dylan Roche kept Gaeil Colmcille’s lead intact. Both sides shared the next two points with Andrew Gormley got his third and with time almost up The Gaeils killed the game off in style with a superb goal from Harry Butler.
As Trim looped a high ball into the square, Early rose highest and broke to Adam Donnelly, Donnelly played a ball into Andrew Gormley who quickly laid off to Brian Hanlon, Hanlon played a lovely ball over the Trim full back to Butler who cut back inside and drove to the back of the net. This was Butler’s second of three goals over the weekend after scoring for the thirds in their win over Clann Na ngael Friday night and goaled against Navan O’Mahonys on Sunday morning for the seconds to cap off a great weekend for the 17 year old.
