Seneschalstown 0-17 Longwood 2-14

Seneschalstown are getting closer, but their first win in Division 10 of this year’s Football League remains elusive as an injury time goal gave Longwood both points in this close encounter played in Fr. Tully Park on Thursday evening.

It was the visitors from south Meath who were quickest out of the traps with the opening two points before Jamie Barry opened his and Seneschalstown’s account with a point from play and a free by the ninth minute. However Longwood moved 0-06 to 0-02 ahead by the end of the first quarter with four points on the bounce.

David Fox got his name on the scoreboard with points either side of another Longwood point but Seneschalstown were enjoying a mini spell as Podge Finegan and Ross Mullen were on target from play.

Owen Mullen also kicked a point to end a fine team move in the approach to half time but indiscipline cost Seneschalstown as two two points frees were the difference between the sides at the interval, 0-11 to 0-07.

The home side were the much better team at the outset of the second half and wiped out the Longwood lead in the opening ten minutes.

Jamie Barry, a constant thorn in Longwood’s side got the ball rolling and this was followed up by scores from Alex Finnegan, Barry again and a two point effort from Shane Mulvany to the right of the arc which put Seneschalstown in front for the first time.

However, Longwood struck for 1-01 shortly afterwards and Seneschalstown were back to square one but they kept plugging away.

Barry and Finnegan tied the game up as the clock approached fifty minutes and scores were swapped in the final ten minutes with David Fox tapping over a close range free.

Longwood were two to the good when Cathal Darby stood over a two points free for Seneschalstown and when that split the posts the game was level entering injury time and at that stage a draw was the least the home side deserved.

However there was one final twist as Seneschalstown were overran from their own kickout and the ball was finished to the net with practically the last attack of the game to leave the home side empty handed.

Following his five point haul, Jamie Barry was awarded the Man of the Match award while Fraser Thom got the special award for bringing a friend as his phone call to Cormac Mullen pre game meant Seneschalstown had a rolling sub on the evening.
