Nobber 4 – 9 (21) Kilmainhamwood 0 – 9 (9)
Nobber kickstarted their A League Division 11 campaign on Saturday evening under lights with a fine victory over local rivals Kilmainhamwood. It’s been quite a while since the North Meath neighbours have met in a competitive game so there was plenty of excitement and anticipation around this fixture in Nobber. Little separated the sides in the opening half with both sides trading scores. The black and ambers shooting into the scoreboard end of the ground worked some fine team moves and scores were finished off well by corner forward Joe Tierney and the lively Lorcan McEntee.
Half-time score – Nobber 0 – 5 (5) Kilmainhamwood 0 – 5 (5)
Whatever was said to be black and ambers during the half-time team talk certainly worked as they put on exhibition of shooting and score taking in the second half. Nobber played with energy and intent guided by Tony McEntee and Paddy Clarke in defence. The towering midfield duo of Mark Condra and Eoin Larkin contributed to the Nobber cause with whispers around the ground comparing the 2 to the famous twin towers of Kerry’s Donaghy and Walsh back in the day.
Sean Carolans’s charges rattled the net on four occasions in the second half, with the impressive Lorcan McEntee bagging a hat-trick along with a handful of points and proved a thorn in the Kilmainhamwood defence all evening. The experienced Pauric Weldon bagging the other goal. Brendan Heffernan – the man who has retired more times than Tyson Fury covered a lot of ground for the Nobber men and influenced the team in a positive way throughout.
A fine team performance throughout by all the players with goalkeeper Niall McMahon making a classy save towards the end of the game to keep his clean sheet intact. A save that the great Peter Schmeichel would have been proud of who is in fact McMahon’s hero. The Nobber management will be happy with their performance and result.
