Meath's Patrick Jordan with Colla Ward Antrim during the opening round of the Leinster U20 HC at Kilmessan

Meath 2-21 Antrim 1-17

Meath were worthy winners of this Leinster Under 20 hurling championship round 1 clash against a fancied Antrim side. The game was played in perfect conditions at a very well appointed Kilmessan club grounds.

The opening exchanges saw free takers Louis McIvor (Meath) and Antrim’s Oisin McCallin share six points. The home side dominated the next ten minutes and hit six unanswered points from Mark Leavy, Kyle Ennis (2), McIvor (2) and Patrick Jordan.

Fiontain Bradley brought Antrim back into it with the games first goal and further points from Liam McEnhill, Thomas McLaughlin, Orrin O’Connor and McCallin had them in front for the first time. The Royals finished with another flourish, McIvor (3) and another from Leavy to go in at the break 0-13 to 1-8 in front.

Sean Corrigan’s men held a one point advantage at the end of the third quarter before Kyle Ennis raised his teams first green flag. Antrim kept battling and fine scores from McCallin (2), Oisin McCamphill, McLoughlin and Charlie McAuley left them two in arrears 1-19 to 1-17 with five minutes remaining.

Meath were not to be denied though. Ennis made it a three point game before substitute Joey Christie guaranteed victory with a goal after a mistake in the Antrim defence.

Meath take on Carlow in round 2 next Saturday March 29th at the same venue.
