Moynalty 1-13 Kilmainhamwood 2-09
Moynalty booked their place in this year’s JBFC final after an enthralling encounter in Nobber on Sunday morning. The game played in difficult conditions had everything, drama, intensity, last-minute heroics, and moments of brilliance. The closing stages swung back and forth with breathtaking pace, leaving both sets of supporters with their hearts in their mouths right until the final whistle.
The match began at lightning pace, as Moynalty did the early pressing with Pauric O’Connor very much involved, but it was Kilmainhamwood who drew first blood after a mistake in the Moynalty defence resulted in a Kilmainhamwood two-pointer and another one point soon afterwards. Suddenly all the pressure was from the Wood and they were awarded a penalty after a wood player was brought down in the box. Under pressure it was cooly converted and Kilmainhamwood were in a commanding position leading 1-3 to 0-00. Playing against a strong wind Moynalty gradually started to gain more possession and while they were pressing hard and saw more of the ball, the tough conditions took their toll, and scoring chances were scarce, Ollie Sheridan opened Moynalty’s account from a free and Niall O'Connor added another. Johnny Lynch added his trademark two-pointer, and Moynalty slowly closed the gap on their opponents. Their calm experience and precise hand-passing disrupted The Woods’ attacks, keeping the danger at bay as half-time approached

The second half proved tense and closely contested. Moynalty began strongly, with points from Pauric O’Connor and Ollie Sheridan keeping them in contention, Kilmainhamwood pressed hard and extended their lead with points from frees but Moynalty didn’t panic and strong performances from Joe Gilsenan, John Brogan & Adam Reilly helped them gain control in the middle and with 10 mins left on the clock, Pauric O’Connor scored a vital goal to give Moynalty fresh momentum. Bryan McCormack was introduced and he instantly added a crucial two-pointer giving Moynalty the lead for the first time in the match. A slick move up the right and Kilmainhamwood struck back with a goal to level the match to the excitement of the “wood” supporters, In a moment that demanded composure, Moynalty’s experience showed as there defence was patient & rock-solid and just when extra time looked certain, Paul Lynch breaks free and delivers, like he did so many times in the past, fisting the ball over the bar to secure victory for Moynalty.
Moynalty were through to their third final in three years where St Marys await them on Sunday week.
