Kilmainham 2-11 St. Paul’s 3-18
Kilmainham welcomed St. Paul’s for a home tie in round 3 of the Junior A div 7 championship on Saturday 6th September. An opening round defeat for the lads meant that a win was needed to progress in this year’s championship. A second loss would mean that we were out.
St. Paul’s arrived with intent with some lively forward play paying dividends as they cut through the Kilmainham defence to kick some nice scores. The last match saw Adam Mc Manus depart with a hamstring injury in the opening minutes; this time it was Darren Tyrrell’s turn. Maybe it was the constant wave of attacks that put their hamstring under pressure! St. Paul’s appeared to be in control, but Richie Brady had goals on his mind yesterday. He was found in space, he drove forward and buried the ball to the St. Paul’s net. We had a free to reduce the deficit to 2 points before half time. Darren King decided to take a quick free for goal, unfortunately his effort was cleared from goals as the referee blew for half time. St. Paul’s with a 3-point lead.
Half time score: Kilmainham 1-5, St. Paul’s 1-8.
The second half started similar to the first with St. Paul’s very strong at carrying ball from defence. They had plenty of pace in their team and were getting into good scoring positions. They kicked some excellent team scores to pull 8 points clear. Richie Brady was a man on a mission and decided it was time for another goal. His second goal of the match reduced the deficit to 5 points. From here St. Paul’s upped the tempo and put the game to bed with some clinical shooting from number 11 and 14 in particular proving a real handful for the Kilmainham defence. Our lads kept pushing for goals, but St. Paul’s packed the defence to protect their lead to hold firm. St. Paul’s running out convincing winners on the day.
This defeat ends our participation in this year's second team championship. We need to look at the bigger picture. A club our size fielding two teams is an incredible achievement. This championship provided football for lads on the fringes of the first team and lads that would have been at home with their slippers on!!
A massive thank you to our hard-working committee for all their help at yesterday’s match. The spread of food for both teams was a lovely gesture. Thanks very much!
