Oldcastle 0-16 Longwood 1-13
A Pat Crawley 2 pointer deep into injury time earned Oldcastle a draw and secured top spot in the group.
Played in Paddy O’Brien Park Navan, the game’s first score came from the boot of Pearse Sheridan as he converted a free in the 3rd minute. Longwood opened their account before some great pressure by the forwards caused a turnover and when the ball broke to Paul Hennessy he made no mistake putting the ball over the bar. Colin Hawdon added a brace of points. Longwood were pushing hard to keep in touch but Dylan Garrigan, Steven Lawless and Rory Crawley were on hand to cut out a series of attacks. After a number of missed opportunities from Oldcastle, Longwood closed the gap helped by a 2 pointer free from Meath goalie Billy Hogan. The 1st half ended like it started with a Pearse Sheridan free to leave the half time score Oldcastle 0-07 Longwood 0-06.
Oran Mulvanny was having a huge say around the middle of the field getting his hands on a lot of ball. Not only that, Oran then stepped up and stuck a 45 straight between the posts for the first score of the half. Longwood were then awarded a penalty which was hit low and hard beyond the stretching Conor McHugh. Lee Healy hit back with a point to level the game. Colin Hawdon added his 3rd point of the game as he danced around the Longwood defence before sending the ball over the bar. Oldcastle introduced Cian McPartland and Cj Healy off the bench as they searched for the upper hand. Longwood stuck another 2 pointer but not to be outdone Oran Mulvanny stepped up again and converted a free from just outside the big arc sending the umpire for the orange flag. Oldcastle looked set to score another point but the ball was blocked down and a 45 awarded. Once again Mulvanny stepped up and coolly slotted the ball straight over the black spot to put Oldcastle 2 points up.
Longwood were keeping the scoreboard ticking over and hit another 2 pointer followed by a white flag to go 2 ahead with the clock hitting the 60 minute mark. Both sides had a number of chances to score but when Pat Crawley got a yard of space he let fly and the ball sailed over to secure a draw. The draw was enough to see Oldcastle into the quarter finals, but it ended Longwoods hopes of championship success.
