O’Mahony’s got off to a good start in the Senior B Camogie Championship, emerging as ten point winners over Clann na nGael in Paddy O’Brien Park under lights on Monday evening.

A free from Aoibhín Kielty was the first to kick the scoreboard operator into action, followed quickly afterwards by a point from play from Isabel O’Connor. Two minutes later, O’Connor played a ball into Jorja Keogh who found the net to give O’Mahony’s a strong early lead.

By the ninth minute, this had been extended to seven points with another Kielty free and an O’Connor effort from play. Izzy Kinsella looked through for goal only for a good save from the Clann na nGael netminder. At the opposite end of the pitch, Amanda Feeney and Tara Fay played a big role in keeping the Clann na nGael score low.

Clann na nGaels first score came after twelve minutes from a free and they followed up two minutes later with a good score from play. In the sixteenth minute, Lauren Woods added her name to the scoresheet. Ten minutes passed without score for O’Mahony’s, during which Clann na nGael added another before Kinsella slotted over a point.

Kicking into gear again, O’Mahony’s took advantage of the last few minutes with the wind behind them with Keogh and Kielty adding three points between them in the last two minutes.

Mags Tompkins was put to the test almost immediately after play resumed, needing to pull off a good save. The Clann na nGael forward won the rebound but this time it was the upright that denied the score.

In the next four minutes, the Athboy-Ráth Chairn outfit added two points, reducing the gap. Ten minutes into the half., O’Connor and Keogh repeated their earlier feat and combined to find the net again, keeping O’Mahony’s with a strong advantage.

The middle sector, including Annie Hogan, Claire Mallon and Anna Gardiner won a lot of possession for O’Mahony’s and fed good ball into the scorers.

O’Mahony’s were kept scoreless for the next fifteen minutes, with Clann na nGael converting three frees to reduce the gap to seven points. A high ball into the square was controlled by Kinsella who directed it to the net to raise the third and final green flag of the evening.

In the closing stages, Clann na nGael needed goals but were denied with great interceptions and defence from Caoimhe McKenna, Doireann Mellett, Saoirse O’Regan, Becky Coen and Alannah Brady. Ten points separated the sides at the final whistle
