The first round of the Intermediate Camogie Championship lit up Kilmessan, where our girls faced a strong home side in perfect playing conditions, with just a slight breeze to contend with.
From the very first whistle, the team showed determination. Playing against the wind in the opening half, they got off the mark when Chloe Mahon opened the scoring after getting a vital touch on a long ball from Louise, sending it straight over the bar. Shayla soon followed up with another fine score, while the midfield duo of Shona and Chloe Morris worked tirelessly, covering every blade of grass. The breakthrough came when Sarah made a clean catch and struck the net with authority, lifting the team and the crowd. Louise then found her rhythm and slotted over several frees despite the tricky breeze. At the break, the girls had carved out a well-earned two-point lead.
The second half was all about fight and flair. The backs stood as solid as stone, with Captain Lisa controlling the line and leading with real authority. Sarah was on the mark again, this time stepping forward to hit another goal, before Chloe Mahon buried one into the bottom corner shortly after. The highlight of the game came when Shayla produced a moment of magic from the sideline, sending the ball looping over the keeper’s head and into the net to the delight of the travelling supporters. At centre back, Clara was immense, commanding her line and ensuring nothing came easy for the opposition.
A special mention goes to debutants Eabha and Aisling, who settled into the side seamlessly and looked right at home on the big stage.
When the final whistle blew, the scoreboard read 4-9 to 0-5 in our favour — a superb performance and a statement victory to begin the campaign. The girls now turn their focus to Na Fianna on September 9th, and if yesterday’s display is anything to go by, this young, energetic, and fearless team is one to watch in the coming weeks.
