Navan O’Mahony’s 1-14
Dunderry 0-17
The lead swapped sides on a number of occasions in the closing stages of this round 4 encounter in St Lomans Park on a damp, drizzly Saturday afternoon. In the end, both teams had to settle for a share of the spoils.
Dunderry got off to a quick start, adding two points in the first two minutes. Jack Walsh converted a free in the sixth minute to get his side on the scoreboard. A minute later, a Walsh free dropped into the square where Tom Condon won possession and passed to Sean McDermott who split the posts.
In the ninth minute, Dunderry edged ahead again before Walsh drew the sides level with a free four minutes later. In a seven-minute period, Dunderry scored a point from play and two frees to put three between the sides, the largest gap between the sides to this point. Condon reduced this to two from possession after a Walsh sideline but Dunderry nullified this with a free.
With three minutes remaining, Walsh hit a ball into the square with McDermott pulling on it. It was saved by the Dunderry netminder but Condon got the rebound into his hand and sent it to the net to draw the game.
Immediately, Dunderry responded with a point from play, which they followed up two minutes later with another similar effort. It could have been three points between the sides only for a textbook hook from Lorcan McDermott, winning possession which ultimately led to a Walsh free being the last score of the half and the minimum between the sides.
Navan O’Mahony’s 1-05
Dunderry 0-09
As in the first half, Dunderry were quick off the mark and extended their lead to two points within thirty seconds of the resumption. Two points in quick succession from Condon left it all square once again and on the four minute mark, O’Mahony’s took the lead for the first time with a Walsh score from play.
Two quick points for Dunderry reversed this lead, but there was never a gap between the sides for the second half. There was three different incidences of a draw in the next ten minute period, with O’Mahony’s edging ahead again with a free from Walsh off the upright.
Less than two minutes later, Dunderry had regained the lead with two points from play. This was to be a trend, with two frees from Walsh in a four minute period swapping the advantage once again and leaving it too close to call.
Thirty seconds into injury time, Dunderry hit a point from play to draw level and then missed a free to go one up. The score did come for them however, with nearly four minutes on the clock. O’Mahony’s were trailing and an attempt at score ended up over the endline for a 65, which Walsh duly converted. The referees whistle blew as the resulting puckout happened.
In addition to the scorers, O’Mahony’s were well served by a strong full back line of Mick Reavey, Ben McEntagart and Finn McNally. Jack Flynn and Eoghan Nugent also impressed. The substitutes of McDermott, Jack McConnell, Dermot McKenna and Paddy Dillon all also made their mark.
