Drumree 2-7 Wolfe Tones 0-11
Drumree hurlers claimed a hard-fought and well-deserved victory on home soil on Thursday evening, overcoming Wolfe Tones on a scoreline of Drumree 2-7 to Wolfe Tones 0-11.
The game began evenly, with both sides trading scores throughout the first half. Drumree’s forwards battled well against a strong Wolfe Tones defence, with Caoimhin King impressing up front, contributing 1-2 from play. James Reilly also kept the scoreboard ticking with a point from play and a well-taken free. At the break, there was nothing between the sides, the score level at Drumree 1-3 to Wolfe Tones 0-6.
The turning point came immediately after the restart, when Joe O’Brien was introduced for David Martin. Joe made an instant impact, driving at the Wolfe Tones defence and raising a green flag within minutes of his introduction. His energy set the tone for the second half and lifted the team’s momentum.
All substitutions made by Drumree had a telling influence. Stephen Doyle converted a free to settle nerves, while Callum Teeling, Rob Lyons, and Fergal O’Neill injected pace and intensity at crucial stages of the game. The fresh legs swung the momentum back in Drumree’s favour, ensuring they carried the fight to Wolfe Tones right to the final whistle.
At the back, Drumree’s defence stood firm under pressure. James Gaughan delivered a superb performance at centre back, playing the role to perfection. He was the linchpin of the defence, keeping everything locked in place providing the leadership needed to keep Wolfe Tones at bay. He was supported by Cillian Dennehy, Johnny Gilsenan, Charlie Doolan, Cian Teeling, and Ronan Gilsenan, who all worked tirelessly to protect the Drumree goal.
The victory was not just about the starting fifteen, but about the strength of the wider panel. The ability to bring on so many impactful substitutes highlighted the depth within the squad. It also showcased the incredible community spirit within Drumree GAA, a club proud to field three adult hurling teams – proof of the commitment, passion, and togetherness that drives results like this one.
A strong finish and a united team effort ensured Drumree emerged victorious on the night.
