Ladies IFC: Goals and penalty save crucial as Michaels make winning start

St. Michaels got their Kepak Intermediate Championship campaign of to a winning start on Wednesday evening last in Walterstown with a two point victory over their hosts.

In a low-scoring tense affair St. Michaels managed to weather a second half storm from a gallant Walterstown side. The home side made the better start and went 3 points to the good after eleven minutes play however Megan Rogers who marked her return to championship football with a great performance, sneaked in behind the home defense to strike the ball to the back of the net. 

Neither side troubled the scoreboard operator for the next 17 minutes until  Marion Farrelly opened her account with a point from play. Walterstown got the opportunity to go in front again when their midfielder Isabel O'Connor was brought down in the square, however the resultant penalty was expertly saved by the St. Michaels 'keeper Laura Halpin. Walterstown tagged on a couple more points but Farrelly split the posts to level the game in the 32nd minute at 1-2 to 0-5. 

Although it was ideal playing conditions both sides could only manage two scores apiece in the second half, the important one was a goal by Chloe Callaghan following a good delivery to her from Marion Farrelly and the latter added a further minor in the second minute of injury time to secure a hard earned victory for the visitors.
