Kilbride 2-15 Blackhall Gaels 0-9
Kilbride made the short trip to Dunboyne on Saturday evening for Round 2 of the Meade Farm Intermediate Championship. And it was Kilbride who came away with a comprehensive win.
Kilbride were ruthless from the off and raced into an early lead despite playing into a stiff breeze. An early point settled the nerves when Andrew McWeeney slotted over after quick thinking from Josh Harford who found him with a quick free with only 20 seconds on the clock. Josh Harford doubled their tally on 4 minutes with a point from play. Further points from Adam Malone and Dan Boyd saw Kilbride race into a 4 points to 1 lead with 7 minutes gone. When Blackhall's Gael's did break the Kilbride rear guard they could find no way past Kilbride’s Luke Faherty when he pulled off a splendid save in goal to keep his team's goal intact.
Kilbride were limiting their opponents as they were given their opponents very little time on the ball. The hard working Harford was instrumental in breaking up the Blackhall Gaels play and gave their half back line a tough 60 minutes. Andrew McWeeney was driving forward with every opportunity and chipped in with 3 points for his hours work. Further points from the commanding centre backs of Timmy Farrell 0-1, David O’Leary 0-1 and Harford 0-3 had them in a commanding lead as we approached the break. But as we approached the break that goal did come and it came from the boot of James Gavin who finished off a sweeping move up the middle. Anytime Blackhall Gaels did threaten in the first half up stepped Ronan O’Leary and Finn White to turn them over and limit Blackhall’s chance to distance shooting. A good 30 minutes of football as they headed to the dressing room.
Half time Kilbride 1-11 Blackhall Gaels 0-3
Half time saw the introduction of Conor McWeeny after a long absence through injury. The second half was a more even contest as Kilbride seemed happy to keep their opponents at arm’s length after doing the damage in the first half. Blackhall Gaels to their credit came out fighting and kicked their first three points of the second half with three pointed free’s. Kilbride killed off the contest when David O’Leray slotted home Kilbride’s second goal to restore their commanding lead. Another attack by Blackhall Gaels was broken up by Harford deep in his own half, A 50 yard pass found the advancing Malone who beat his man and cut in along the end line, he ruthlessly found O’Leary on the edge of the square who finished calmly to the net to restore parity and Kilbride’s 11 point lead. A real sucker punch to Blackhall Gaels who had started the second half brightly. David O’Leary free on 45 minutes push the lead out to 12 points. Both team’s traded scores for the remaining 15 minutes as Kilbride ran out comprehensive winners to go two from two.
