August 15, 2025

Moynalvey's Craig Gilsenan has the Walterstown goals in his sight during the Meath IFC clash at Dunshaughlin

Moynalvey secured their second win of Group A of the Meade Farm Intermediate Football Championship with an eight point victory over Walterstown at Dunshaughlin on Thursday evening 14th August.

Moynalvey 1-14
Walterstown 0-9

A workmanlike performance saw Moynalvey eventually grind out an eight point win over Walterstown, with the side in maroon outscoring their opponents ten points to four in the second half to take the two points on offer and make it two wins from two outings in the IFC to date.

With Walterstown having lost their opening round game to St. Patricks they were always going to come out fighting in this second round and made life difficult for Moynalvey throughout, indeed but for their wastefulness in front of the posts the result may have been a lot closer.

Moynalvey got off to a dream start when a David McLoughlin turnover set Mark O’Sullivan through on goal who finished a diagonal shot low across Walterstown ‘keeper John Davis to raise the game’s only green flag as early as the third minute.

Moynalvey’s top scorer David McLoughlin followed up soon after with a free after he was fouled to make it 1-1 to 0-0 with five minutes played.

Walterstown then rattled off a trio of scores including a two point free and a Ruairi O’Dowd ’45 to level matters up, 1-1 to 0-4.

A Cillian O’Sullivan free was countered by a Neil McGinley point, with Moynalvey rounding off the first half scoring with frees from David McLoughlin and Cillian O’Sullivan to give them a two point advantage, 1-4 to 0-5, as the teams retreated to the dressing rooms for half time.

David McLoughlin fired over three minutes after the restart, with Walterstown’s Fionnan O’Connor replying with a shot which looked to be a two pointer but for Moynalvey goalkeeper Conor Egan getting his finger tips to it making it one point, 1-5 to 0-6.

Three points from David McLoughlin, the first a huge two pointer from play and the second a free put Moynalvey five points up twelve minutes into the second half, 1-8 to 0-6.

Moynalvey were then let off the hook twice, firstly Walterstown hit the Moynalvey post with a drive at goal from an acute angle and two minutes later Ruairi O’Dowd blazed wide of the posts when it looked easier to hit the target. Fionnan O’Connor did eventually get Walterstown back on the score board when pointing in the 47th minute.

Moynalvey midfielder Craig Gilsenan making his return from an injury lay off then burst forward with one of his trademark runs to split the Walterstown uprights making it 1-9 to 0-7.

Moynalvey corner back Brian O’Reilly then found himself at the opposite end of the field to point, with Walterstown responding a minute later with a point of their own.

Struggling to shake off their opponents, two close range frees in quick succession from David McLoughlin extended Moynalvey’s advantage to seven points with eight minutes remaining, 1-12 to 0-8.

Ruairi O’Dowd tapped over a close range free for the Blacks in the 59th minute. The game’s final score went the way of top scorer David McLoughlin who stroked over a two point free off the ground to round off his ten point haul and see Barry O’Keeffe’s side run out eight point winners, 1-14 to 0-9, when referee Andrew Smith blew the full time whistle.

Best for the winners were Brian O’Reilly, Conor Harnan, Darren Brennan, Mark O’Sullivan, David McLoughlin and Conor Egan.
