Navan O’Mahony’s 2-07 Seneschalstown 1-14
Navan O’Mahony’s suffered a four-point defeat in the first round of the Kepak SFC with a lacklustre performance in a sunny Paddy O’Brien Park on Thursday evening.
It was a slow start to the game, with both teams struggling to break through the opposition defence. Megan Collins opened the scoring with a point before the visitors equalised within a minute. Ten minute on the clock saw Denise McGrath convert a penalty, with Seneschalstown responding well with a point from play.
Although McGrath pointed again with an impressive score, it was Seneschalstown who kicked on and had drawn level in the twenty-third minute. Both sides had missed opportunities, with O’Mahony’s hitting the post three times and Robyn Murray pulling off some good saves, including a penalty in the twenty-second minute. Sarah Maguire and Tara Fay also made some good interceptions to prevent scores in this time.
Three minutes later, Seneschalstown broke through for a goal to take the lead for the first time. Although Muireann Nelson added the last two points of the half, O’Mahony’s went in in a deficit at the interval.

This gap was extended almost immediately, when the visitors opened the half with a score in the first fifty seconds. Nelson added a score in response, having been set up by Isabel Thorp. The next two scores came from the Yellow Furze side and they led by three with twenty minutes remaining.
Chloe Duffy was denied a goal scoring opportunity by a save from the Seneschalstown netminder, with Collins scooping up the rebound and scoring a point. The visitors responded quickly however, and added three points in the next five minutes to leave O’Mahony’s with a five point gap.
A brief glimmer of hope came when Lauren Woods scored an impressive goal, but O’Mahony’s couldn’t build on this and went a further ten minutes without scoring. In the final quarter of the match, Nelson added one score for the home side while Seneschalstown added three, running out as four point winners.
Collie O’Rourke’s side now regroup and take on Royal Gaels in two weeks time in the second round.
