Navan O’Mahony’s 2-7 Seneschalstown 1-14

A hard working Seneschalstown overcame O'Mahony’s in this Kepak Senior Ladies football championship game played in perfect conditions Paddy O’Brien Park in front of  a large crowd.

O’ Mahony’s were first on the scoreboard with a point on 5 minutes. It took nearly 8 minutes for the first Seneschalstown score to arrive, and it was debutant Anna Donnelly who chalked up a point from play. Not long after the equaliser the home team were awarded a penalty when a free taken from the small square didn’t go the required distance and  the resultant kick was dispatched to the net despite the best efforts of keeper Louise Coyle who got a hand to it. The roving Caragh Monaghan then cut the deficit with a fine point from play but almost immediately the home team cancelled this out. The visitors struck the next two scores with Orla Finnegan and Stacey Grimes hitting points. Seneschalstown were awarded a penalty moments later when Orla Finnegan was fouled but alas the penalty was saved by the home keeper. Grimes then added another point to cut the deficit to the minimum. Anna Wogan got he name on the scoresheet with the Seneschalstown goal when the ball broke to her, she guided it into the  corner of the net soccer style. O’Mahony’s cut the deficit to the minimum with two points on the run into the break.

The second half started with an early free from Grimes after a driving run from Tara Traynor straight from the throw-in. The home side cut the deficit to the minimum again with a point from play before Donnely chipped in with her second point from play. O’Mahony’s were then reduced to 14 players for 10 minutes with a yellow card in the 5th minute of the second half. Caragh Monaghan then added a second point from play to push the lead out to 3 points. Louise Coyle then brought off a superb save with her foot as it looked like the home team were destined to get their second major. The home team did get some reward with a point. On 12 minutes, half time substitute Ruth Commons knocked over a nice pint from play which was soon followed up by another Grimes point and the Furze ladies led by 4 now going into the final quarter. Donnelly then hoisted over  a superb point from a free out on the right to a massive cheer from the visiting support. On the quarter hour, the home side gave themselves a major shot in the arm with their second goal from a well worked move up the field to cut the deficit to two points. Grimes then settled the visitor’s nerves with a fine point from play. O’Mahony’s now restored to the full complement after the yellow card tagged on another point and a nail biting final 10 minutes ensued. With 3 minutes of regular time remaining Grimes tagged on another free. O’Mahony’s had a good chance of a goal but Seneschalstown net minder Coyle was off her line quickly to pressurise the kicker and the ball went wide. Seneschalstown midfielder Seanaidh Hickey would complete the scoring with a fine point from play in injury time. O’Mahony’s pushed for a late goal to salvage at least a point from the game,  but the Seneschalstown players defended well as they had done so all night in what was an excellent team performance of work rate, effort and skill from start to finish.
