Ian Bermingham fires over for Trim during the SHC game against O'Mahony's at Pairc Tailteann

Trim 2-23; Navan O’Mahony’s 1-18

Report: Kevin Coleman

A seven minute second half scoring burst, between the nineteenth and twenty sixth minute, almost rewrote the script in this latest Championship encounter. Trim held a comfortable eleven point cushion as the game edged towards the final quarter, a position that they had held throughout, when the unthinkable almost happened with an unanswered, Navan O’Mahony’s, goal and six points reducing their advantage to a mere two points. The ship, however, was steadied and Trim stretched their advantage once again to give the final scoreline a more balanced reflection of the overall proceedings.

On a dry and overcast Páirc Tailteann evening, with a significant breeze blowing into the town end, Trim opened the scoring with a Darragh Heffernan point, in the second minute, quickly followed by a David Murtagh strike from half way. O’Mahony’s responded to level matters through their top scorer Jack Walsh, his final tally being 0-12, and centre forward Tom Condon. The next three scores fell Trim’s way through David Murtagh (f), Joey Cole and a fine Ian Birmingham effort from near the side line. Dermot McKenna pulled one back for the Mahonys before Darragh Heffernan had his second conversion, following a fine interception, and another David Murtagh effort eased Trim into a seven points to three lead by the thirteenth minute.

Jack Walsh had a further brace to reduce the deficit once again but Trim responded with four unanswered points through Joey Cole, following fine team play starting from Trim ‘keeper Eoin O’ Reilly, Ian Birmingham, Kyle Ennis and Mark Molloy, following another interception to the O’Mahony’s play. The first Trim goal came in the eighteenth minute through David Murtagh and there were further points from James Andrews and George Douglas. In between Jack Walsh had another pair of conversions for the Navan side.

Half Time: Trim 1-13; Navan O’Mahony’s 0-7.

The second half exploded into life with a Mikey Cole point after a mere twenty seconds, but it was that O’Mahony’s man, Jack Walsh, who responded with a brace of his own. A fine Alan Douglas effort from sixty metres was, again, cancelled out by Jack Walsh and he was on hand once again but this time Trim had a double score from James Toher and a James Murray converted free. Further Trim scores from James Murray, Darragh Heffernan, and David Murtagh earned only a single response from O’Mahony’s.

With a comfortable, perhaps complacent, advantage Trim had stretched their lead and by the nineteenth minute were well ahead on a scoreline of 1-20 to 0-12. The next seven minutes saw that remarkable O’Mahony’s comeback and, with four minutes of normal time still to play, a mere two points separated the sides. A missed free from James Murray was soon forgotten as he found the back of the O’Mahony’s net following a fine through pass from Joey Cole. Further Trim points from George Douglas, Darragh Heffernan, and James Toher saw out the scoring as referee Stephen Masterson sounded the final whistle.
