Navan O’Mahony’s 1-18 Trim 2-23

A second-half comeback from Navan O’Mahony’s in Round 3 of the SHC fell just short, with Trim pulling away again in the closing minutes in Páirc Tailteann on Saturday evening.

The first score of the game came from Trim with a point from play after ninety seconds, followed up almost immediately with another, edged in off the upright. In the fifth minute, Jack Walsh opened O’Mahony’s scoring with a free. The sides were level a minute later when a Dermot McKenna sideline was doubled on by Cormac Keyes, with Tom Condon winning possession and splitting the posts.

Trim added three points in the next five minutes before Walsh set McKenna up for a point from play. Another for Trim and two Walsh points from play left a point between them midway through the first half. Trim enjoyed a purple patch and extended their lead to six points over the following seven minutes. A Walsh free broke the momentum before Trim rallied with a goal, putting eight between the sides.

Two points in quick succession left ten points between the sides entering injury time, reduced by a Walsh free as the final whistle went.

With the wind behind them, O’Mahony’s had a big hill to climb in the second half. The lead was extended to ten within thirty seconds of the resumption. Walsh added another point from play in the thirty second minute, before hitting a long-range free a couple of minutes later.

Trim edged ahead again and with twelve minutes to go, held an eleven point lead. Assisted by a pass from Lorcan McDermott, Condon pointed from play before Trim responded in turn to keep eleven between the sides. Three points in just over a minute, from Jack Flynn, Condon and Walsh left eight between the sides. Having been set up by Shane McCarthy, Condon saw his opportunity and found the net, reducing the gap to five.

The Brews Hill men, spurred on with momentum, added three points in as many minutes with Walsh scoring two and the third from Keyes after a great flick from Mark Usher. Two points separated the sides with one minute of normal time remaining. The next score was to be crucial and O’Mahony’s had a number of opportunities.

It was Trim that managed to secure the much-needed score with a goal, pushing themselves ahead again and breaking the momentum. Adding points in injury time, they ran out as eight point winners. O’Mahony’s were well served throughout the pitch, with Eoghan Nugent, Finn McNally and Ben McEntagart producing some great play in defence as well as strong performances in the forward lines.
