All County JFC: Great start for Rathkenny

Rathkenny came away from Grangegodden with a ten-point win over hosts Gaeil Colmcille in this Meath Cleaning Services Junior All County Football Championship Division 2 Group A Round 1 game played last Tuesday evening, August 5th.

The visitors started this contest very well with Jack Gore and Patrick Knowles popping over two points apiece in the opening five minutes. The Kells men halved the deficit when they sent over a two-pointer from play on seven minutes. Things got even better for the hosts when they hit 2-1 inside ninety seconds to leave them five in front with ten minutes played. Cathal McKeever sent over Rathkennys fifth point, but within a minute the Kells men had hit their third goal of the evening and looked to be in the driving seat with a seven-point lead after twelve minutes. Noah Jenkinson sent over a point for the Rathkenny men before the Kells men added their fourth point of the evening. Rathkenny steadied the ship and produced a great fourteen-minute spell where they kept the hosts scoreless and managed to score 2-4 of their own. Noah Jenkinson sent over Rathkennys seventh point, and this was followed by a point from Oisin Cummins-Fuller and a brace from Max McKenna. Full forward Jack Gore finished a nice move to the net and two minutes later Andrew Bellew followed up to net after a good initial save from the Kells keeper. On twenty-eight minutes Gaeil Colmcille sent over their final score of the half, but Rathkenny still had time to extend their lead with points from Joey Curtis and a Patrick Knowles free. Referee Seamus O’Connor brought the half to a close with the score Gaeil Colmcille 3-05 Rathkenny 2-12.

Rathkenny corner forward Noah Jenkinson extended their lead with a thirty-second minute point. The hosts responded five minutes later from a free. With thirty-eight minutes played Noah Jenkinson added Rathkennys third goal of the evening. Things got even better for the visitors when Patrick Knowles tapped home Rathkennys fourth goal having watched goal efforts from Noah Jenkinson and Cathal McKeever both come back off the posts. Rathkenny now had a ten-point lead. The hosts sent over a point before Patrick Knowles pointed from a penalty. Rathkenny added two further points from Jack Gore and Joey Curtis. 

The Kells men sent over a huge two-pointer on fifty minutes. Rathkenny emptied the bench before Max McKenna sent over his third point of the evening with five minutes of normal time remaining. Patrick Knowles added his fifth point of the evening before Gaeil Colmcille popped over a free followed by a two-pointer free with time running out. Patrick Knowles then sent over a free in added time to put ten between the sides in the finish.
