After witnessing a tame senior game between the same sides, both sets of supporters were hoping for a lively All County Junior Championship match in Walterstown on Saturday evening. It was the town team that got off to a flying start against their rural rivals as they tore into a, four points to no score lead in the opening 10 minutes. Shane McKeever got the Tones opening score on 11 minutes with a fisted point after a good run. A Ben Hoey two pointer and a quick follow up from the men in blue had them seven points to three in front on 21 minutes and dominating the play around the field. The Tones made a number of changes on the field and the pace of their play increased, they outscored the town men 2-3 to 0-4 in the final ten minutes of the half, the goals coming from Rioghan Ó Beaglaíoch and Joe Smith. As the half time whistle blew Tones were in front despite Simonstown playing the better football, particularly in the opening twenty minutes. The men in purple cared not a jot and went in leading 2-6 to 0-11.
Simonstown hit a great two pointer right at the start of the second half to regain the lead but it was to be the Tones who would go on to dictate the third quarter. Rían Ó Fiannaidhe won a number of free’s which the ever-dependable Joe Smith dispatched with aplomb, the efforts on 41 & 45 minutes both being two pointers and leaving the Tones 2-13 to 0-13 ahead entering into the final quarter. The final quarter descended into a scrappy battle as both teams fought for the victory, Tones had opportunities to extend their lead and perhaps should have won a couple more free’s but they looked to be in a decent position on 56 minutes as they lead 2-13 to 0-14. A Simonstown two pointer on 57 minutes left it a one score game and when a high ball was lofted into the Tones box deep in injury time one sensed it had goal written on it, the ball pinged around and a Simonstown boot stuck it in the net to earn them a deserved draw.
This was an entertaining game with both teams playing with plenty of endeavour. Tones had solid performances from Conor McKeever, Alan Lynam, Shane McKeever and Joe Smith. The group will know that more will be required.
