JFC: Missed chances prove costly for Kilmainham

August 05, 2025

Kilmainham's Michael Newman with Lee Hennessy St. Ultans during the JFC clash at Grangegodden

Kilmainham 1-10, St. Ultan’s 0-15

Kilmainham made the short trip to Grangegodden on Sunday 3rd August 2025 to take on our neighbours St. Ultan’s. Kilmainham have had the upper hand in this fixture lately, but it was St. Ultan’s who left Kells with the two points on offer. Kilmainham will be disappointed. This was a match that we should and could have won but our efficiency in front of goals let us down with some bad wides. A cross-field wind in Grangegodden made it difficult for shooting but it was the same for both teams.

St. Ultan’s started brightly looking to get quick ball into their lively forwards. St. Ultan’s worked some nice team scores to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Our lads were putting some good passage of plays together with some nice scores taken. Mickey Hoey finished to the St. Ultan’s net after a good team move. We spurned two other good goal chances to go further ahead. St. Ultan’s were guilty of some poor shooting themselves as both teams struggled to get to grips with the wind. The game was tight as expected with very little to separate the sides as we approached half time.

Half-time score: Kilmainham 1-6, St. Ultan’s 0-8.

The lads knew that a big second half was needed to come away with the win. Kilmainham started to get on top at midfield and kicked two points to go three ahead. We looked in a good position to drive for home. Some poor shotting kept St. Ultan’s in the match. The St. Ultan’s keeper kicked a monster two pointer, and they followed this up with a point from play to tie the match. From here they went in front. We were winning plenty of ball in midfield and we were working ourselves into good positions but could not finish the moves. This was proving costly as St. Ultan’s were able to pick off a few points. Dean Peppard pulled off two brilliant saves as St. Ultan’s looked to finish the game off. We had the game back to two points with time nearly up. Ger Morgan broke through the St. Ultan’s defence and had goal on his mind, but the St. Ultan’s player took him out of it as he was about to shoot. A black card was deservedly handed out. Mickey Newman thought about going for goal with a packed St. Ultan’s goal mouth in front of him. He instead decided to find Michael Hoey for a two pointer to tie the match. Unfortunately, the move broke down. We still had possession, but referee Paul Mooney decided to blow the full-time whistle. A two-point victory. Joy for St. Ultan’s, devastation for our lads.

The lads will be disappointed because this was a match that got away from us. They can take great heart in their overall performance. The team has good structure and there was plenty of good performances on the day. On another day them chances go over, and we win. Best of luck to our corner back Kieran Needle who flew out to Australia after the match. Kieran put in a massive shift this year and was playing great football. He will be a massive loss both on and off the field. We wish him all the best. The boys will need to regroup and go again. We take on Ballinlough in our next match on Saturday 16th August at 6pm in Moynalty. Our second team take to the field this Saturday 9th August against Drumconrath in Castletown at 6pm.

Best for Kilmainham were: Dean Peppard, Larry Morgan, Freddie Newman and Kieran Needle.
