Ballinlough 1-02-04 (11) Dunderry 1-02-13 (20)
Ballinlough made the trip to Dunderry on Bank Holiday Monday evening for Round 1 of the All County Football Championship Division.2, and it was the home side who started at a blistering pace, aided by quite a significant breeze as they pointed three times in quick succession by the fifth minute, before using that aforementioned breeze to land two two-pointers, one from play and one from the placed ball in the seventh minute.
Further points were added in what was a commanding opening period to leave Dunderry leading by nine points to no score after almost 15 minutes of football.
Ballinlough finally got going with a point from play from Joe Farrelly, before points were traded with Peader Byrne accurate with a free for Ballinlough in the 21st minute.
The home side weren’t finished yet though and added another 1-01 by the 29th minute, but Ballinlough gave themselves a lifeline just before the break when Mark Tynan and Joe Farrelly combined well, with the latter getting the finishing touch as the ball was struck to the net in the 31st minute.
With that Referee Peter O’Halloran blew the half time whistle Ballinlough trailing on a scoreline of 1-02 to Dunderry’s 1-11.
From the restart it was Dunderry who landed an early point from play and it took Ballinlough almost ten minutes before they troubled the scoreboard again, but it was a score worth waiting for as Shane Lynch unleashed a superb effort from outside the arc which sailed over the crossbar in the 39th minute.
Both sides matched each other score for score over the next five minutes with Jamie Casserly pointing twice for Ballinlough by the 45th minute.
Another point for Dunderry in the 47th minute extended their lead but credit must be given to Ballinlough who didn’t give up and were rewarded when Jamie Casserly fired over an excellent two pointer in the 48th minute.
But overall Dunderry were the better team on the day and finished with two further points from play, so when Referee Peter O’Halloran blew the full time whistle the scoreboard read Ballinlough 1-08 to Dunderrys 1-17.
Not the result we wanted but it was a good chance for lads who didn’t start last Saturday to get some valuable game time and it’s great for the club to be able to field two teams which was something that proved difficult over the last League campaign.
