Skryne 1-15 Dunboyne 0-15
An impressive Skryne upset the odds in this first game of the Meath Senior Football Championship with a goal to spare over Dunboyne at Pairc Tailteann on Thursday night.
Padraig Finnerty had the honour of kicking the first score of the championship but after missed chances from both sides the next white flag didn’t arrive till the 14th minute, Michael Murphy sending over for the recent league finalists. Donal Lenihan gave Dunboyne the lead before last year’s semi finalists enjoyed a purple patch. Harry Rooney fisted over, Darragh Campion kicked two two pointers and Finnerty added to his tally with another orange flag. Skryne went in at the break 0-8 to 0-6 in front.
Robbie McCarthy narrowed the lead with the opening score of the second half but by the 10th minute Skryne were 0-12 to 0-8 in front thanks to points from Campion (2), Danny Fitzpatrick and Niall Finnerty. Eric Lowndes and Conor Donohoe traded points and on the 15th minute John Harkin kicked a two pointer to ignite the St. Peters challenge. Cian Duggan and Murphy had the game tied up, 0-13 each, with ten minutes remaining and momentum seemed to be with the favourites.
Mick O’Dowd’s Skryne had other ideas. Points from Niall Finnerty and Charlie Swan was followed by a goal from substitute Andrew Canavan and Skryne were on their way to victory. McCarthy and Lenihan closed the gap but the goal Dunboyne required never arrived and the Taramen claimed the two points on offer.
Gaeil Colmcille are up next for the winners, Dunboyne turn their attention to Summerhill.
