St Brigids 3-16 Moynalty 0-18
Moynalty wrapped up their Division 4 league campaign with a defeat to a sharp St Brigid's side in Ballinacree on Sunday morning. Despite a solid performance and spells of dominance, it was the hosts who made better use of their chances, particularly in front of goal.
St Brigid's got off the mark early with a point, but Moynalty responded well through Pauric O’Connor. The home side hit back with a well-taken goal and added a point before Moynalty struck a purple patch: three two pointers from O’Connor, a fine long-range effort by Paul Lynch, and the ever-reliable Johnny Lynch with his trademark two-pointer. Paddy Byrne chipped in with another close-range score, and Moynalty looked to be seizing control. However, St Brigid's regrouped with three unanswered points, swinging the momentum and wresting back control in midfield. Just before the interval, O’Connor added his fourth with a composed finish from a tight angle to keep the visitors in touch.
Half-Time: St Brigid’s 1-06 – Moynalty 0-10
Paddy Byrne opened the second half brightly for Moynalty, but a speculative St Brigid's two-pointer shifted the mood again. Byrne, making his first start of the season, responded with another, but the pivotal moment came in the 42nd minute when St Brigid's created an overlap and found the net for the second time. Kian Lynch & John Brogan replied with tidy scores, but the hosts rattled off three more unanswered points to stretch their lead. Byrne added his third of the day and Joey Gilsenan notched two to narrow the gap, but Brigid's third goal with ten minutes left sealed the contest. Gilsenan added another late on, but the damage was done.
Despite the defeat, Moynalty can take heart from a strong finish to the league, having shown encouraging form in recent weeks. With championship football just around the corner, they'll feel better prepared than last year, and if they can carry this momentum forward, there’s every reason to believe they can go one better than last year.
