Moynalvey went down to Meath Hill by five points in the final round of the J.M Food Services Div. 2 league at Meath Hill on Saturday afternoon 5th July.
Meath Hill 1-14
Moynalvey 0-12
Although a semi-final spot was already guaranteed, an injury depleted Moynalvey left Meath Hill on Saturday afternoon having suffered their first defeat of the Div. 2 campaign in the final round.
The 2024 intermediate football championship winners led by the Meath GAA 2024 Young Footballer of the Year Gary Breslin who was to the fore on the scoring front meant Moynalvey headed the long journey home with their only loss of the Div. 2 campaign.
The game’s opening score raised the first orange flag of the afternoon when David McLoughlin sent over a two pointer for the game’s opening score after sixty seconds. Home side Meath Hill responded with a free from top scorer Breslin sixty seconds later.
Conor Quinn capitalized on a breaking ball to chip over Moynalvey’s second score in the 3rd minute, however Meath Hill then rattled off four unanswered scores including a two pointer of their own to lead double scores 0-6 to 0-3 with eleven minutes played.
David McLoughlin interrupted that Meath Hill scoring spree briefly when he converted a free. An excellent save from Moynalvey ‘keeper Conor Egan denied Meath Hill a goal, but the home side’s goal did come in the 20th minute when a smart Meath Hill move saw Breslin blast to an empty net, leaving it 1-6 to 0-4.
Moynalvey responded perfectly to the setback of the goal outscoring the home side six points to one over the remaining ten minutes of the half. A sweetly struck ’45 from David McLoughlin was responded to by a Gary Breslin free, before a trio of McLoughlin points followed by a booming two pointer from Michael Brady on the stroke of half time ensured the sides left the field level when referee Liam Reddy blew for half time, 1-7 to 0-10 at the break.
Upon the restart Meath Hill seized the initiative with the opening two scores of the second half being two pointers, the first from Gary Breslin and the second from Cormac Sheehy to lead by four, 1-11 to 0-10, eight minutes into the second half.
The home side extended their lead out to five with a Gary Breslin free in the 51st minute, before Moynalvey eventually got on the second half score board with a close range David McLoughlin free after Meath Hill were penalized for not having the correct numbers in their attacking half, making it 1-12 to 0-11 with seven minutes remaining.
Meath Hill added on a brace of points with corner back Peter Griffin raiding forward for a point, followed by a Jack McMahon score, Moynalvey’s second score of the second half and the game’s final score came in additional time with a Vinny Walsh free, meaning Meath Hill collected the two points on offer with the score board reading 1-14 to 0-12 to the side in blue at full time.
