Kilmainham 0-15, Dunderry 1-10
Our last round of the league was a home match against Dunderry on Friday 4th July.
Kilmainham were already in a relegation play off battle, while Dunderry were in fine form and were hoping to make one of the semi-final spots at the top of the table. Dunderry had the wind in the first half and started the strongest. Kilmainham had plenty of possession but were not making good use of it, while Dunderry were picking off some nice scores with each play. A goal from Dunderry after 15 minutes had them firmly in the driving seat. Our lads were really struggling for scores against a strong wind. Dunderry were in a commanding position at half time with an 8-point lead.
Half-time score: Kilmainham 0-4, Dunderry 1-9
Kilmainham took the shackles off for the second half and really went for this match with nothing to lose. We started to completely dominate midfield with Larry Morgan and Mickey Newman to the fore. Dunderry struggled to get out of their own half and faced wave after wave of Kilmainham attack. Our lads cut through the visiting team to kick some lovely team scores. Ger Morgan’s two pointer being a match highlight. Mattthew Mullen also kicked two brilliant points from play. Harry Newman kicked the last point of the match to put us two points up with a few minutes to go. Dunderry tried hard to get a goal to win this match, but the Kilmainham defence held firm to hold out for a well-deserved two-point victory.
This was a much-needed victory for the lads. Their second half display was a joy to watch as each player really stood up and played their heart out in securing a well-deserved home win. Kilmainham and Dunderry will face each other again in the championship in August. The lads finished their league campaign on 6 points in the table after 11 games played.
We probably should have more points on the board, but we played too many of our league matches missing too many starting players. We now find ourselves in a relegation battle against Ballinlough to decide who will remain in division 3 and who will drop down to division 4 with Ratoath for 2026. Dates and times to be confirmed.
Best for Kilmainham were: Matthew Mullen, Harry Newman, Seanie Mahon and Mickey Newman.
