Div 2 HL final: Nolan leads the way as Dunderry gain promotion

July 03, 2025

Dunderry's Liam Dempsey has Sean Quigley and Niall Smith for company during the Division 2 HL final at Batterstown

Dunderry 2-18 Dunboyne 1-18

Dunderry took to the field in Batterstown with only promotion to Division 1 hurling on their minds.

Dunboyne struck first from play and followed up with a free. Timber Leavy's men replied firstly with Mark Leavy from play, then a peach of a side line cut from in front of his own dug out by Cathal Barron. Evan Nolan followed on with one from play and a free to leave the score 0-4 to 0-2

Dunboyne got the next three and Dunderry duly got the following three - all placed balls from the ever dependable Nolan. Dunboyne picked off another before the village men took a hold of the game. Two more Nolan frees put three between the sides. Liam Dempsey claimed the next puc out in style and off loaded to Rian Fay who made no mistake. Next up Barron collected , fed Fay again who this time off loaded back door to the waiting room where Mark Leavy was lurching and drilled over to stretch the lead to five.

Dunboyne responded with a free. Dunderry needed to go in at half time having made as much hay as possible when the weather was good.

Who should intersect a Dunboyne clearance only the big fella with two number ones on his back, looking up he sees Evan Nolan who was  30 yards from Goal. He shook off his defender leaned back and unleashed a rocket into the ground in front of the hapless keeper. Goal.

Dunboyne got a free back before the half time whistle to leave the score board reading 1-11 to 0-8

Dempsey drove over himself to start the second half. Dunboyne responded with a goal from play and a free.

Darragh Fay collected on the end line, took off up the side line and went long to Cathal Barron who raised a white flag as a just reward for his efforts.

Dunboyne got another point from play before Leavy popped over again after Barron dug it out for him.

Two Dunboyne frees and one Dunderry free has the black and whites up by three but by no means in control.

Of the next seven points Dunderry only got one leaving us trailing by two.

Another Nolan Free brought the deficit to one. When Adam Kelly gathers the Dunboyne puc out on his own half back line, who should he see all alone only Mark Leavy. A pin point pass is gathered first time and off he goes. Goals win games and this one was sweet. Then who should finish the scoring only Evan Nolan from yet another free. A fitting end to the game as he missed none all evening.

Great displays all over the field but defenders like Níall Ó Laoire and Liam Coogan stood out. Liam Dempsey used all his experience to lead the younger lads on.

A great win and starting point for the upcoming championship.
