Meath Hill 1-15 Dunderry 2-12
Meath Hill welcomed Dunderry on a damp Thursday evening for Round 8 of Division 7, with Peter O’Halloran taking charge of proceedings.
Dunderry started the brighter of the two sides, registering the opening two scores of the match. Meath Hill were slow to settle but eventually found their rhythm through Colin Breslin, who notched two fine scores — one of them a two-pointer — to bring his side to life.
Mark Tully added a free shortly after to edge the hosts in front. Following a series of missed chances from both sides, Breslin was on target again after a smart catch and assist from Tully. Ryan Carry added to the tally after a well-worked team move, before Dunderry replied with two points to narrow the deficit. Dunderry threatened for goals but were denied twice by goalkeeper Cormac Monaghan — recently returning from a cruciate injury — who produced a pair of crucial saves to preserve Meath Hill’s advantage. Tomas Smith added a classy point off his right boot, but Dunderry responded with a close-range free. Tully nailed his second free of the evening after excellent work by the Meath Hill attack to give the home side a three-point advantage at the break.
Half-time score, Meath Hill 0-08 Dunderry 0-05
The second half opened with Tully converting another close-range free, this time won by the industrious Lucas Farrelly, who impressed throughout from half back. Breslin, with his eye firmly in, struck a stunning two-pointer off the deck to extend the lead. Dunderry clawed one back, but the game soon turned on its head. In a quick-fire blitz, Dunderry rattled the net twice and tagged on a point to swing momentum fully in their favour. With three further points added, they surged into a strong lead with ten minutes to play.
Meath Hill responded with spirit. Now operating at corner forward, Cormac Monaghan stepped up again, this time with his boot, firing over a much-needed point after a pinpoint ball from Tully. Dunderry added two more scores, but Meath Hill were not done. Colin Breslin was hauled down in the square, and Tully calmly dispatched the resulting penalty to reduce the gap to two. With time ticking down, it was Breslin — fittingly — who had the final say, coolly converting a two-pointer to level the match and bring his personal tally to nine points.
