Kilmainham 2-14, Ballinlough 3-17
We welcomed Ballinlough to Kilmainham on Tuesday 24th May 2025. A minute’s silence was observed by both teams before the whistle in honour of our great club man Declan Black who sadly is no longer with us. This match was a curtain raiser for the team’s championship meeting in August and after last night's result, both teams could meet again in a league relegation battle. These matches between the two clubs are always keenly contested and sporting matches, Kilmainham coming out on top in last year’s corresponding fixture.
30 seconds were only on the clock and Kilmainham had a goal. A brilliant run by Mickey Newman, a quick lay off to Michael Hoey and on to Andy Arkins, goal. We hit the next 2 points from play before Ballinlough opened their account with a point on 4 minutes. Mickey Hoey hit a point before Ballinlough hit back with a point. Mickey Newman hit our second goal on 20 minutes. His goal bound shot taking a deflection to wrong foot the Ballinlough goalie. Johnny Quinlan hit a brilliant two pointer. Terence Daly hit his first of the day followed by another point by Michael Hoey. Ballinlough hit their first goal of the day on 24 minutes. Both teams were guilty of balls dropping short and some poor shot selection. As the whistle went for half time in a high scoring half, Kilmainham had a deserved 4-point lead.
Half-time score: Kilmainham 2-9, Ballinlough 1-8
Ballinlough had their second goal of the match 5 minutes into the second half to reduce the deficit to a point. Terence Daly got his second of the day on 8 minutes. Andy Arkins then hit a nice point before Daly struck again with a well taken score. Ballinlough got their third goal of the match on 14 minutes. Larry Morgan responded with his second point of the day. Ger Morgan and Mickey Hoey got on the scoreboard for us. Ballinlough got momentum just at a vital stage of the match to power home for victory. Kilmainham had some wayward point attempts and a few goal chances that were not properly executed. They were made to pay at the other end as Ballinlough ran out 6-point winners. Kilmainham will rue the fact that they did not kick on and win this match having been 6 points up in the second half. There was three points in it with 3 minutes to go. There was a lot of frustration at decisions the lads felt went against them and that led to some poor indiscipline on our part, which handed the visitor’s a few avoidable scores towards the end of the match.
For the neutral this was a good open and honest game of football. Plenty of scores and near misses in a championship paced match. Both teams will lock horns again in championship in August and possibly before then!
A quick turnaround for the lads. Kilmainham will travel to Syddan to play Syddan in round 10 of the league on Saturday 28th June at 6pm. A big thank you to everyone that came out to support the team. The lads really appreciate it.
