Seneschalstown 9-19 St. Colmcilles 1-10
Seneschalstown picked up a badly needed win over fellow strugglers St. Colmcille’s in Saturday’s Tommy Dowd Oil Football League Division 5 Round 9 encounter played in sweltering hot conditions in Fr. Tully Park on Saturday afternoon. The home side dominated from start to finish as they went on the rampage after a number of near misses in their previous games where they coughed up valuable league points in the dying embers of matches, and the home side were determined to right the wrongs of those outings.
Right from the off, Seneschalstown took control with Joey Moore pointing after two minutes. After five minutes, the first of Seneschalstown’s nine goals arrived when David Fox rose highest to flick a long delivery to the net. Fox, however, unfortunately injured himself in the act of scoring and was replaced by Niall McCabe. The Cilles’ registered their opening score from a free shortly after but Jamie Norris cancelled it out at the other end when he opened his account for the afternoon. Niall McCabe and Seán Davis were both on target to move the home side six ahead after 12 minutes. St. Colmcille’s raised another white flag and with the mercury hitting the mid 20’s referee Martin Dawson allowed water breaks for the players. Seán Davis had the final say of the opening quarter when he landed a booming two pointer.
Straight from the restart, Seneschalstown got their second goal when Niall McCabe was left unmarked in behind the ‘Cilles defence and he finished to the net. Seneschalstown were not letting up – Davis, Mattie Cowley, Joey Moore and Davis again kept the pressure on as it was all one way traffic.
As the half ticked into injury time Seneschalstown had one final scoring burst. As he has done so quite often in the last few weeks, Owen Mullen pulled a rabbit out of a hat when he took off on a meandering run through the heart of the defence, and after escaping the clutches of a number of tacklers he rolled the ball home. In the final play, Bradley Kirwan found himself in space outside the two point arc and he took aim at the posts to which the referee raised both arms to signal for a two pointer. It left the hosts leading 3-12 to 0-03 at the break.
If Seneschalstown were prolific with one and two point efforts in the opening half, they were goal hungry in the second half as the green flag was raised another six times. The visitors got two of the opening three scores after the restart with Seán Carey responsible for the Seneschasltown effort. Jamie Norris, operating slightly further out the pitch by this stage came up with two huge two point efforts for Seneschalstown, one from play and one from a free. St. Colmcille’s raised another white flag but the second half goal rush was only about to begin.
38 minutes were gone when Joey Moore finished off a good team move to the net for Seneschalstown’s fourth goal. Seconds later the green flag was being raised again when Owen Mullen got his second goal of the afternoon.
St. Colmcille’s briefly broke the charge towards their goal with two points on the trot, but Jamie Norris responded with a goal at the other end to increase Seneschalstown’s lead. The visitors to their credit kept going and kept their score ticking over which included a goal. Seán Carey added his second of the game before Seneschalstown finished with another glut of goals.
The result was well beyond doubt when a long Seán Commons delivery evaded everyone and went into the net for the seventh Seneschalstown goal. From the kickout, Jamie Norris was unmarked inside and he made no mistake when presented with the opportunity. Joey Moore could have added another goal but he chose to fist the ball over as the clock ticked deep into injury time and there was still time for another goal when Shane Mulvany finished from close range after some good work from Liam Maguire.
Seneschalstown will be glad to pick up the win which moves them off the foot of the table, and the margin of the victory also boosts their score difference, moving it up to +3 which could be crucial come the final standings in a few weeks time.
