Navan O’Mahony’s 3-13 Drumree 2-23
In spite of a good start, O’Mahony’s fell short in the second half of this final-round Div 2 HL encounter on Sunday morning, played in a mix of all four seasons in Drumree.
The hosts were quick off the mark, raising a white flag within the first sixty seconds. In the third minute, Sean McDermott battled with the Drumree back for possession, getting a one-handed swing off to find the net. Less than three minutes later, the same player repeated the feat, giving O’Mahony’s five point lead.
Drumree responded quickly with a point, which Jack Flynn nullified a minute later. An eighth minute point from Cormac Keyes left six points between the sides. Two quick scores from Drumree reduced the gap before midfielder Lorcan McDermott added his name to the scoresheet.
The final twenty minutes of the first half didn’t continue in this vein, with Drumree scoring the majority of the scores in this period. Keyes added three frees but this was matched by seven points from the hosts and only a single point separated the sides at half time John Foley and Dermot McKenna both made impressive interceptions in this period.
Navan O’Mahony’s 2-06 Drumree 0-11
With the strong wind against them in the second half, it was to be an uphill battle for O’Mahony’s given the narrow advantage they held. Within two minutes, Drumree had drawn level and a goal in the third minute left O’Mahony’s chasing the game for the first time.
By the sixth minute, the hosts had added a further three points. This momentum for the hosts was only broken by a Lorcan McDermott point from play, with Drumree then adding another three before the midway point.
Two frees from Keyes and a point from Sean McDermott reduced the gap and left the game there for the taking. This wasn’t to last however with Drumree finding the net and adding a points seconds later. After a pass from Cormac O’Shea, Shane McCarthy kicked the ball to the net, giving O’Mahony’s some home once more.
Drumree kept the scoreboard ticking over however, and late scores from Keyes and McDermott were not enough to secure a result. On the head to head rule, we will be playing Division 3 hurling in 2026.
