Rathkenny climb above Meath Hill. 

Rathkenny travelled to Meath Hill and came away with both points in this J M Food Services, Football League Division 2, Round 9 game played last Thursday evening, June 19th.

Referee Gabriel Patterson threw up the ball with the visitors playing towards the scoreboard goals. Rathkenny had two wides in the opening two minutes before the hosts took the lead with a point from play inside three minutes. James O’Hare opened Rathkennys account with a point off his left boot inside five minutes. Meath Hill had a goal chance well saved by Rathkenny custodian Finn Moore on six and a half minutes, before the rebound was sent over the bar. The hosts extended their lead further with their first two-pointer of the evening on eight and a half minutes. Rathkenny came more into the game and sent over the next four scores, Luke Kealy and James O’Hare on thirteen minutes, Luke Kealy again on fifteen minutes and Jeaic Timmons on nineteen minutes. The hosts levelled matters with a free before going back in front with their second two-pointer free of the evening. Rathkenny ended the half with three further wides.

Meath Hill opened the second half scoring with a two pointer from play on thirty-three minutes. Rathkenny replied with a two-pointer free from Finn Moore. Luke Kealy sent over his third point of the evening as the clock approached the fortieth minute mark to leave the minimum between the sides. Rathkenny put their noses back in front when David Curtis dispatched to the net. It followed great work by James O’Hare who was quick to take a free and lay off a pass to the onrushing Curtis to score. Substitute Daniel Gavagan was less than a minute on the pitch before sending over Rathkennys ninth point of the evening. Two minutes later Christy Meade saw a scorching effort go just above the crossbar and the lead was out to four points. Meath Hill responded with their third two-pointer of the evening with forty-seven minutes gone. Adam Byrne put Rathkenny three in front with a point on forty-nine minutes. Three minutes later a Meath Hill free was almost punched to the net, but instead just shaved the crossbar and the lead was back to two. Rathkenny went further in front when they were awarded a penalty in the fifty-fifth minute. It came after Padraig McKeever was pushed to the ground as he was about to pull the trigger. Oisin Cummins-Fuller dispatched it to the net to leave five between the sides. On fifty-eight minutes the hosts sent over their fourth two-pointer of the evening. There was still time for Rathkenny to reply through the boot of Ciaran O’Hare as we approached sixty-two minutes. Back came Meath Hill with their fifth two-pointer of the night in the sixty-fourth minute. With that the final whistle went and Rathkenny go above their opponents in the table, with two games remaining.
