Seneschalstown 1-13 Skryne 3-10
The concession of three goals left Seneschasltown three points short of hosts Skryne in this P.R Coyne & Sons Football League Division 1 encounter played in gloriously warm conditions in Skryne on Thursday evening. Seneschalstown will also rue a number of two point opportunities spurned in the second half which could have earned them something on the evening.
Skryne were quick to assert themselves on the scoreboard. Within the opening minute, they registered their first point. They continued their early momentum and had three points on the board in the early staged. It took until the 9-minute mark for Seneschalstown to break their duck, with Robbie Finnegan opening their account. Skryne, however, responded swiftly, restoring their three point cushion with another white flag for themselves.
Seneschalstown began to grow into the game thereafter, Bryan Clarke kickstarted this when he capitalised on a loose ball in the 11th minute to register their second point. They were given a further boost after 17 minutes when Dylan Keating came up with a big play. After a surging run, his initial shot was saved by the Skryne keeper, but Keating was alert to the rebound, burying it in the back of the net for a goal, putting the visitors into lead for the first time at 1-02 to 0-04.
The lead, however, was short-lived. Skryne went down the other end moments later, were awarded a penalty, which was converted and swung momentum back in their favour. This goal, combined with another couple of points point, saw Skryne re-establish a three point lead by the 19th minute.
Seneschalstown refused to yield, battling hard to stay in contention. After 22 minutes,, Alan Mulvany added a point for Seneschalstown following a well-executed move from a kickout, . Skryne responded, however ate the other end to go four ahead by the 22nd minute.
As the half neared its conclusion, Robbie Finnegan kicked a two point free a two-point free for the visitors after a foul on Cian Hosie. Alan Mulvany followed this up with point from play in the 29th minute (and the gap was down to the minimum at the break, 1-07 to 1-06.
The Tara men came out at the outset of the second half and delivered a strong third quarter. They swiftly added to their tally, registering two points in three minutes upon the resumption extending their advantage. They then got in for their second goal to go five ahead and made Seneschasltown’s task all the harder. Alan Mulvany provided a much-needed response almost immediately, scoring their first point since the restart in the 36th minute. However, Skryne were not finished with their power play finding the net for a third time in the 38th minute, pushing their lead to 3-09 to 1-07
Despite the deficit, Seneschalstown started to battle back gradually. In the 39th minute, a Bryan Clarke two pointer from play left the two goals between the sides.
Skryne managed to add another point in the 43rd minute but Seneschalstown continued to press, with Clarke converting a two-point free from a 50-metre advancement in the 47th minute, leaving five in it.
As the game entered its closing stages, Seneschalstown continued to eat into the deficit. Eoin Finnegan slotted home a free from close range in the 62nd minute, further chipping away at Skryne’s lead, followed up by a Robbie Finnegan 45’ but the earlier two point misses proved costly as Seneschasltown could not get close enough.
