HL Div 2: Curley and McCormack point the way for Drumree

June 16, 2025

The Drumree team that defeated Kildalkey in the Division 2 hurling league

Drumree 1-25 | Kildalkey  1-17

Drumree produced a commanding away performance in Kildalkey on Friday evening to notch up a well-earned eight-point victory in the Division 2 League. Despite playing on opposition turf, Drumree took control from the outset and never let go, with sharp shooting and disciplined defending securing the win.

The visitors established a solid platform in the first half, going into the break with a four-point cushion. Cathal McCormack and Evan Curley led the charge early on, with McCormack hitting a superb 0-8 from play and Curley reliable as ever from placed balls, finishing with 0-11 from frees. AJ Collins and Odhran O’Riordan chipped in with important scores from midfield and defence respectively, as Drumree showed attacking depth across the field. O’Riordan was outstanding throughout—seeming to cover every blade of grass and making key interventions at both ends of the pitch.

Defensively, Drumree were well marshalled by Gavin Byrne and Niall Gavin, who held firm at the back, while Kevin Hally delivered an outstanding performance—clearing danger ball and again showing great composure under pressure. Aidan Fraher and Sean Kennedy turned over ball at key moments to stifle the Kildalkey attack, while Sean Doyle had an excellent game between the posts, pulling off important saves and commanding his area with confidence.

The second half saw Kildalkey push hard to claw back the deficit, and they found a lifeline with a goal midway through the half. However, Drumree responded in kind. Keith Rooney worked tirelessly in the full-forward line, winning possession and linking play. He was also central to the game’s turning point: his clever movement and perfectly weighted pass set up substitute Mark Devanny, who raced through on goal and buried the sliotar to the back of the net.

Josh Wall and Sean Kilcoyne also contributed to the scoreboard, each notching fine points from play to maintain Drumree’s momentum. The introduction of Jack Leonard for Aidan Fraher in the closing stages ensured fresh legs at the back as the game drew to a close.

In what was a balanced and clinical team performance, Drumree’s composure, scoring spread, and disciplined defence proved too much for the hosts.
