Rathkenny travelled to Oldcastle and came away with both points in this J M Food Services, Football League Division 2, Round 8 game played last Sunday morning, June 8th.

Referee Pat Clarke threw up the ball with the visitors playing towards the town goals. Rathkenny sent over the opening score through Luke Kealy in the third minute. The hosts levelled matters with a fifth minute close in free. Christy Meade sent Rathkenny back in front with a point, and the lead was out to three after a long-range effort from James Macken added a two pointer on eleven minutes.
Oldcastle had the ball in the net in the thirteenth minute and went on to send over the next two scores. Back came Rathkenny when a Jeaic Timmons effort hit the posts and Jack Gore buried to the net off the left foot with eighteen minutes played. Five minutes later the same player got his second goal of the game when a ball across the goal was cleverly palmed his way from Niall Branigan. He calmly evaded the tackle and buried to the roof of the net. The visitors hit a purple patch with two points from Joey Curtis and one from Max McKenna to leave seven between the sides with twenty-five minutes gone. The hosts sent over a free on twenty-six minutes, before Rathkenny added a third goal. Quick thinking from Jack Gore found Christy Meade in acres of space and he cooly slotted past the keeper with twenty-seven minutes on the clock. Jack Gore sent over the final point of the half to leave it 1-4 to 3-8 at the break in favour of the visitors.
It took almost eight minutes for the first score of the second half, a goal, which went to the hosts. The visitors got their first score of the half from the boot of Max McKenna with forty minutes played. Two points from the hosts on forty-two and forty-four minutes were cancelled out by two from the visitors through Joey Curtis and a Jeaic Timmons free. The home side popped over a free on forty-nine minutes, before the visitors all but ended the contest with two goals inside two minutes. Jeaic Timmons finished expertly to the net on fifty-four minutes, and the same player laid off a pass to Joey Curtis to blast to the net.
Corbin Jenkinson sent over Rathkennys final score of the game on sixty minutes. In added time Oldcastle added a point, a two pointer and another point with the last kick of the game.
