Seneschalstown's Sean Commons

Seneschalstown 2-14 Simonstown Gaels 2-14

Two late points rescued a draw for hosts Simonstown Gaels against Seneschalstown in this Tommy Dowd Oil Football League Division 5 Round 8 game on Sunday morning.

Seneschasltown will be frustrated not to take the full points on offer after not being headed for the duration of the 60 minutes but on the flip side, the point keeps Seneschasltown very much on the coat tails of the teams above them as they scrap to avoid the drop.

Seneschalstown hit the ground running, registering the opening score in the 1st minute with a free from James Conlon. The early momentum continued when Jamie Norris emphatically struck for a goal in the 3rd minute after a move involving Owen Mullen and James Conlon. Points followed from play via Norris again in the 7th minute and Owen Mullen just a minute later continued their early momentum.

Simonstown eventually responded through a point in the 11th minute, and they added a goal in the 13th minute to haul them back into contention. Another point point for the Navan side reduced the gap to the minimum, 1-03 to 1-02

However, Seneschalstown regained their rhythm, with James Conlon firing over in the 16th minute before Sean Commons struck a mammoth two pointer the 16th minute to stretch their lead again. Things got even better for Seneschasltown when Owen Mullen got on the end of a superb through ball from Commons and he slotted home to put the visitors seven to the good.

Simonstown refused to go away, however, and hit back with three consecutive points  between the 24th and 26th minutes. Jamie Kirwan added a free for Seneschalstown in the 27th-minute, and Will Finegan added another point from play a minute later to leave Seneschalstown in a strong position at the break at 2-08 to 1-05.

Simonstown started brightly after the restart, with points in the 31st and 35th minutes. Jamie Kirwan kept Seneschalstown ticking over with a free a minute later, but Simonstown continued to claw their way back with two on the bounce shortly after wards. James Conlon chipped in with another point in the 42nd minute, followed by a good effort from Jamie Norris two minutes later.

But Simonstown struck a major blow in the 46th minute when they got through for a goal to reduce the margin and swing momentum their way.

The hosts added another but Conlon responded immediately for Seneschalstown with his fourth point of the day with ten minutes to go which looked like it would give Seneschasltown enough momentum to kick on. Simonstown answered with a point of their own but David Fox made an immediate impact, scoring within a minute of entering the fray to restore Seneschalstown’s lead.

The closing stages were frantic, the sides swapped scores with Owen Mullen on target for Seneschalstown.  Unfortunately for Seneschalstown, two late scores for the hosts ensured a share of the spoils and keep Seneschalstown rooted to the foot of the table.
