Seneschalstown 0-11 Gaeil Colmcille 0-16
Despite a promising first half performance, Seneschasltown went down to a defeat to Gaeil Colmcille following a strong second half performance from the visitors on Friday night in Fr. Tully Park.
The sides traded early scores with Gaeil Colmcille opening the scoring in the 2nd minute. Owen Mullen, a late introduction to the starting 15 following an injury, replied almost immediately for Seneschalstown, and Danny Waters edged them ahead with a well-taken point from the right hand side in the 6th minute.
Gaeil Colmcille responded with two scores by the 12th minute — one from play and another from a free — but Seneschalstown then took control. Robbie Finnegan unerringly accurate from placed balls kicked back-to-back scores in the 13th and 14th minutes to restore the lead.
Although Gaeil Colmcille equalised in the 15th minute, Seneschalstown finished the half strongly. Dylan Keating split the posts in the 19th minute with a fine effort off the outside of his left boot from just inside the two point arc, followed by two more frees from Finnegan. After another Gaeil Colmcille point, Finnegan added a two point free from the 45 metre line as the hosts opened a four point lead in the run up to the break. Seneschalstown did have David Gordon to thank on a couple of occasions during the half as he produced a couple superb saves from point blank range
Despite a late point from Gaeil Colmcille before the break, Seneschalstown took a three point lead into half-time, and looked in control of proceedings.
However, the game turned sharply after the restart. The Kells men came out with a pep in their step, reeling off four unanswered points in the first eight minutes of the half to hit the front.
Alan Mulvany briefly halted the momentum with a fine point from play for Seneschalstown in the 41st minute after a tidy move, but that would be their only score from open play in the second half.
The visitors kicked three more by the 50th minute as they started to open up a lead for themselves but Robbie Finnegan kept his side in touch with another free in the 52nd minute, bringing his personal tally to seven, but Gaeil Colmcille quickly responded with two more from play in the next minute to stretch their lead further.
A late free deep in injury time stretched the margin to five points but while Seneschasltown will be disappointed with their second half performance, the first half performance will give them plenty to work with going forward.
