Moynalvey maintained their good form in the J.M Food Services Div. 2 football league with a ten point win over Navan O’Mahonys in round 8 played at Paddy O’Brien Park on Thursday evening 5th June.
Navan O’Mahonys 0-12 Moynalvey 2-16
Moynalvey’s unbeaten run sees their momentum towards securing a semi-final place continue as they kept their Div. 2 unbeaten run intact with this well deserved win over Navan O’ Mahonys at a rain drenched Paddy O’Brien Park.
First off the mark in the second minute were the host side, with corner forward Robbie Keelaghan splitting the Moynalvey uprights. Visitors Moynalvey got their opening score in the third minute through Adam Murphy and seven minutes later a long ball in from Craig Gilsenan found Shane Lenehan who blazed a goal chance clear of the crossbar to put Moynalvey ahead, 0-2 to 0-1 with ten minutes gone.
Navan O’Mahonys regained the lead in the 13th minute when midfielder Aodhan Mallon sent over the first of the game’s two pointers with a converted free from just outside the 40m arc. A minute later the same player fired over again, this time from play, to leave it double scores, 0-4 to 0-2, midway through the half.
O’Mahonys’ advantage was extended to three when Shane Maguire pointed in the 17th minute, but the lead swung Moynalvey’s way when firstly Darren Brennan clipped over a point after being found with cross field ball from Padraic Harnan and then full forward Mark O’Sullivan struck for the game’s first goal to leave it 1-3 to 0-5 with twenty minutes played.
A further trio of Moynalvey points, two from David McLoughlin and one from Ciaran Harnan left it 1-6 to 0-5. O’Mahonys added a further point from Mike O’Reilly to leave O’Sullivan’s goal between the sides, 1-6 to 0-6, as the teams retreated to the shelter of the dressing rooms upon referee Kieran Olwell’s half time whistle.
Navan O’Mahonys started the second half in determined fashion, narrowing the deficit to the minimum with a brace of frees, the first from close range by Robbie Keelaghan after indiscipline from Moynalvey on a quick O’Mahonys free and the second converted by Aodhan Mallon.
Moynalvey eventually opened their second half account when David McLoughlin sent over his third of the evening in the 11th minute of the half. From here on Moynalvey took control of the second half, reeling off 1-6 without reply.
That purple patch of Moynalvey scores was kick started by points from Adam Murphy and David McLoughlin, before the game’s second goal when a point attempt dropped short and Adam Murphy rose highest to finish to Niall Devlin’s net, leaving it 2-9 to 0-8 after 47 minutes.
A further four converted frees, three from McLoughlin and one for Adam Murphy left the men in maroon with a commanding 2-13 to 0-8 lead with five minutes remaining.
O’Mahonys Aodhan Mallon pointed a free, with Moynalvey responding with a second of the evening from Darren Brennan. A pair of Robbie Keelaghan scores, the second a two pointer left it 2-14 to 0-12 a minute into added time, but there was still time for another score late on with the last play of the game, a Moynalvey two pointer from the boot of former Newcastle Falcons, London Irish and Leinster rugby player Hugh O’Sullivan to leave the final score board read 2-16 to 0-12 in favour of Moynalvey.
