Cormac Keyes keeps his eye on the ball for O'Mahony's during their Division 2 HL clash with Blackhall Gaels

Navan O’Mahony’s 1-14 Blackhall Gaels 3-12

There was some good hurling on display in Batterstown on Tuesday evening, in spite of the incessant wet and windy conditions. Three goals from the hosts were enough to see them over the line.

Blackhall Gaels were quick off the mark, pointing within thirty seconds. O’Mahony’s first score of the game came in the form of a goal, when Killian Clarke Doggett found Shane McCarthy with a pass before the latter rattled the net.

Less than a minute later, this was followed up with a point from Finn Malone, giving O’Mahony’s a three point advantage. After a few scoreless minutes, Blackhall added two before Keyes split the posts to draw one back. The hosts took the lead again with a converted penalty.

O’Mahony’s responded quickly, with Cormac O’Shea setting up Jack McConnell for a point. Sean McDermott brought the lead to his side again briefly before two goals in three minutes swung the momentum and the advantage to the hosts. Both sides added points approaching the half time whistle, with Keyes and Jack Walsh scoring for the Navan side.

The first two scores of the half came from Jack Walsh frees, reducing the gap to two after six minutes. This was extended to four once again, with Blackhall Gaels adding three points in a four minute spell, to one from Walsh.

After Walsh converted a free in the eleventh minute, O’Mahony’s struggled to score for a period while the hosts added three. With the rain pelting down, conditions were tough for both sides and O’Mahony’s had a job to do to erase the deficit in the time remaining.

Good scores from Walsh, Evan Cully and Malone left three points in it with a few minutes to go and O’Mahony’s needing a goal to salvage a point from the encounter. Despite their best efforts, and thwarted by the Blackhall defence, a goal never came.  The final score came from the hosts, leaving them four point winners at the final whistle.
