FL Div 2: Two pointers down Curraha

May 26, 2025

Curraha's Diarmuid Moriarty

Curraha 0-9  Meath Hill 0-19

Curraha suffered a ten point defeat to Meath Hill on Saturday evening in Round 7 of the J. M. Food Services Division 2 league.

On a very wet and miserable Saturday evening in Meath Hill GFC it was the home side who came out victorious helped by the fine scoring from Meath Hill goalkeeper Dominic Yorke from 2 pointer frees. Curraha did welcome the return of Niall McLarnon after 8 months on the sidelines after he suffered a serious hip injury against Wolfe Tones in the Championship and it was a welcome sight to see him return to play.

This game got underway at 7:30 pm as Curraha made the long journey for this encounter. Curraha with the aid of a strong wind at their backs for the opening 30 minutes got the scoreboard ticking when Diarmuid Moriarty kicked a massive 2 pointer free off his left foot after Curraha half back Ruairí O’Sullivan forced a turnover which led to Moriartys opening score. Curraha were once again on the scoreboard in the 7th minute of the half when the returning Podge O’Hanrahan kicked a point off his right foot from a tight angle coming from the Meath Hill kickout which was won by Brian Joyce. Meath Hill got their first white flag of the game with a point from Gary Breslin. Meath Hill followed up with a 2 pointer free from Dominic Yorke as well as a point from Cormac Sheehy to give the home side a 1 point lead with 11 minutes gone in the half. Diarmuid Moriarty leveled the contest in the 13th minute when he went by 2 Meath Hill men before clipping the ball over the bar. As the conditions worsened play became harder and there were a lot of handling errors. Meath Hill had a 3 point lead by the 17th minute with 3 points from Gary Breslin 2 of which were from frees. Curraha introduced Kevin Doyle for Mylo Hussey in the 24th minute of the half. Curraha made it a 2 point game with 3 minutes left in the half with the materials in James McEntee's jersey being tested and McEntee raised a white flag whilst he had an advantage. Dominic Yorke kicked another 2 pointer free to leave 4 between the sides. Meath Hill were reduced to 14 men at the end of the first half for an off the ball incident. Joseph Curran sounded the halftime whistle in the 32nd minute.

HT score:  Curraha 0.05  Meath Hill 0.09

The second half resumed with Curraha now having the advantage of a man extra for the remaining half. Meath Hill had a fast start with a 2 pointer free from Gary Breslin as well as a point from Jack McMahon from play with 6 minutes gone in the half. Curraha responded through Diarmuid Moriarty with a fine point from a free to leave 6 between the teams. Meath Hill fired over 5 further scores without reply, one of which was a 2 pointer from Dominic Yorke from a free with 15 minutes remaining. Curraha introduced Conor Joyce for Jamie Fewer and Peter Sherlock for Michael John Lavin with 7 minutes left. Diarmuid Moriarty converted a fine free off the ground after a fine team move. Meath Hill finished off their scoring with a further 2 pointer from a free from the Meath Hill number 1 as the game entered the final minutes. Unfortunately it was one of those days for Curraha where it just wasn't to be their day. They did however finish the game well and put together some fine build up plays starting in the fullback line with Mark Fox putting in a fine performance in his first full game for Curraha. Diarmuid Moriarty got a lovely point from play out on the right hand side of the pitch with the wind and rain still causing havoc for proceedings. Curraha finished the game with a final score from marksman Diarmuid Moriarty with a point from a free off the ground which was the final action of the game.

A deserved victory for Meath Hill and in the end it was the 5, two pointers which cost Curraha. Curraha played some very nice football throughout but it was just not to be for Curraha. They have to regroup and go again for their next league game in 2 weeks time against Duleek/Bellewstown on Saturday the 7th of June at 4pm in Duleek.
