HL Div 2: Rooney returns as Drumree claim victory

May 19, 2025

Drumree's Gareth Rooney

Drumree 1-19, Trim 1-15

Drumree secured a hard-fought and well-deserved victory over Trim on home soil, with a final scoreline of 1-19 to 1-15 in an exciting and closely contested encounter. The match had everything: intensity, skill, and standout individual performances—but most importantly, it marked a day of celebration for Drumree as they welcomed back a key figure to their ranks.

Gareth Rooney’s return to centre field was met with open arms, and he wasted no time in reminding supporters what he brings to the team. Commanding in the middle, Gareth was at the heart of Drumree’s transition play, showing composure under pressure and distributing the ball with intelligence and precision. His tireless work rate set the tone for those around him.

His brother, Keith Rooney, looked delighted to have him back—and he made his own impact felt in spectacular fashion, rattling the net with a well-taken goal that turned out to be a crucial moment in the match. Keith was a constant threat at full forward, linking play, winning possession, and showing great movement throughout.

Cathal McCormack, operating on the half forward line, was another standout for Drumree. His energy and sharpness were key in keeping the pressure on the Trim defence. McCormack chipped in with several important scores and proved to be a reliable outlet time and again.

At the back, Gaz Byrne delivered a typically solid performance at full back. Calm under high balls and strong in the tackle, Byrne was a reassuring presence and played a vital role in keeping Trim’s dangerous forwards from finding a rhythm.

Trim fought hard and never let Drumree pull too far ahead, keeping the scoreline tight deep into the second half. But with the Rooneys leading from the front and contributions across the pitch, Drumree had just that bit more in the tank to push over the line in the closing stages.

This was a big win for Drumree—not just for the two points, but for the sense of momentum and unity it builds. With Gareth Rooney back in the fold, and performances like this from the entire squad, the future looks bright. A warm welcome back to Gareth Rooney—great to see him once again wearing the Red and White.
