May 13, 2025

Rathkenny's Jack Gore

The hosts came away with both points in this J M Food Services, Football League Division 2, Round 6 game played in Paddy O’Brien Park, Brews Hill last Saturday afternoon, May 10th.

Navan O’Mahonys 1-09 Rathkenny 1-07

Referee Paul Mooney threw up the ball and the hosts playing against the wind had a point on the board in the opening minute. It would take five further minutes for the games next score as a pointed effort from the two-point scoring arc dropped into the Rathkenny goal and the hosts were up by four points. The hosts added a point from a close in free on nine minutes.

Rathkenny had two efforts short to the keeper before finally getting on the scoreboard after twelve minutes. A stray pass from O’Mahonys rearguard was collected by Max McKenna who offloaded to Padraig McKeever. His long pass was caught by Joey Curtis who turned his marker, ran at the goals, and dispatched to the net. There were only three further scores in the half as a combined ten efforts failed to add to the scoreline. The hosts sent over on sixteen and twenty-nine minutes while the visitors added their first point of the half in added time, from the right boot of Jack Gore, to leave it 1-04 to 1-01 at the break.

Rathkenny started stronger after the resumption with points from a David Curtis free on thirty-one minutes, and Oisin Cummins Fuller from play on thirty-six, to reduce the gap to a single point. The hosts extended the lead on thirty-eight minutes at the second time of asking, after the initial effort was well blocked. Rathkenny then hit their purple patch with three unanswered points in three minutes. A thirty-ninth minute free from David Curtis was followed by a point from play through Jack Gore before another free from David Curtis on forty-two minutes. Rathkenny were now one up playing against the breeze. The hosts levelled matters in the forty-fourth minute. The scoring stats then became exclusive to the hosts as they added three unanswered points of their own in the next five minutes.

Rathkenny then were very unlucky in the fifty-third minute when a move down the Rathkenny left was squared across the square and palmed towards the empty net but instead hit the back of an onrushing Rathkenny player. The visitors still had further efforts to goal, but it was left to David Curtis to finish the scoring on fifty-nine minutes. Ninety seconds into added time Rathkenny almost snatched victory when a close in free was quickly played and Niall Branigan saw his effort come back of the butt of the posts.
