Nobber 2-12 Bective 3-13
Nobber travelled up the R162 on a sunny, summer Saturday evening last to face Bective in Round 6 of their Division 4 league campaign. Having won the last day against St Brigid’s, the black and ambers were hoping to make it two wins on the bounce. The last two encounters between Nobber and Bective were close, with Nobber winning in the league in 2024, and the two sides could not be separated in the group stages of the Intermediate Football Championship played in Ballinlough in Autumn 2024.
Nobber started the game brightly and were moving the ball well, setting up attacks. Wingback Seamus Fagan found himself in unfamiliar territory heading towards the Bective goals, and after a fine team move, he finished the ball low and hard to the back of the net. Many supporters may have wondered if this was Farmer Fagan’s first-ever goal for Nobber; however, he was quick to inform people that it was his second, and he had scored one against Carnaross earlier in the Tailteann Cup pre-season competition.
The opening 20 minutes proved a tight affair with nothing separating the sides, a fine two-pointer from Maynooth University student Conor Owens, and a free from Niall Farrell. For the remainder of the first period, the green and white of Bective managed to push on on the scoreboard and went into the half-time interval with a healthy lead. There was a large amount of injury time played at the end of the first half due to an unfortunate injury to one of the Bective forwards.
Half-time score – Nobber 1 – 3 (6) Bective 2 – 7 (13)
The Deesiders showed signs of improvement in attack in the second half and were determined to cut Bective's lead. Scores in the third quarter from placed balls from Farrell (2) and the returning from his travels, Sean Meade, helped to give the Nobber supporters hope. The closest the back and ambers managed to get to Bective at one stage was four points, with a Bective goal halfway through the second half proving a vital score in terms of the result.
Nobber showed good endeavour and fight in the second half with further scores from Farrell, Owens, and Meade. Substitute Jamie Duffy finished a fine goal to the back of the net, leaving the Bective keeper with no chance. In truth, on reflection, the black and ambers may regret not taking scoring opportunities, with a notable amount of scoring opportunities falling short into the goalkeeper’s hands. Farrell and Owens were the sharpshooters for Derek Walsh’s charges – the two men who are die die-hard Manchester United fans, showed glimpses of their scoring capabilities throughout.
Next up for Nobber is a home fixture against Moynalty on Sunday, May 25th at 11 AM.
