FL Div 3: Mistakes prove costly for Kilmainham

Kilmainham's Michael Hoey

Dunsany 5-11 Kilmainham 1-5

Kilmainham travelled to Intermediate side Dunsany on Thursday 6th May on the back of a solid performance against Ballivor in round 5 of the league. The opening 15 minutes of the match was played at a snail’s pace as both sides set up to be defensively solid. Dunsany looking to defend in numbers and counterattack as quickly as possible. Kilmainham had plenty of possession in the opening half but struggled to trouble the scoreboard. Dunsany were much the same although they did score a good goal after a quick break out from defence and they had their second goal after a long ball into the square dropped into the Kilmainham net. The game had completed flipped in their favour and they were now in complete control. Andy Arkins and Michael were our only point scorers of the first half.

Half-time score: Dunsany 2-6, Kilmainham 0-2.

A mountain to climb for our lads for the second half. Just when you think things couldn’t get any worse. A minute into the second half, a point attempt by Dunsany dropped short and was fisted out to the Dunsany corner forward who fell but still managed to bundle the ball over the Kilmainham line for goal number three. From there any hope of a comeback was dashed as Kilmainham tried to reduce the deficit, only to be hit by scores on the counterattack from a well set up Dunsany team. Captain Larry Morgan did score a very good point from play after an excellent team move. Mickey Hoey bundled home a goal and tagged two pointed free’s as the game concluded.

We would like to wish our goalie Paddy Hennigan a speedy recovery from an ankle injury that forced him off early in the second half.

This was a very poor team performance. The team was flat and made too many mistakes on the night to have any chance of winning a game of football. A lot of soul searching is needed after this game. The good news is that it was only a game of football, nobody died at the end of the day. We will regroup and go again.

Kilmainham welcome Donaghmore Ashbourne’s second team to Kilmainham in round 7 of the league on Sun 25th May at 1pm. Thanks for the support that we had at the match. Hopefully,we will give you something to cheer about the next day.

Best for Kilmainham were: Larry Morgan, Stephen Newman, Declan Mullen and Harry Newman.
