FL Div 9: Curraha come up just short

May 06, 2025

Curraha's Ruairi O'Sullivan

Curraha 1-15  Navan O'Mahonys 2-14

Kevin O'Connors goal after 51 seconds of play in the second half wasn't enough for Curraha to prevail in a gutsy performance against Navan O’Mahonys on Bank Holiday Friday night. The game ebbed and flowed throughout with the lead swapping hands throughout but unfortunately another fine performance from Curraha came up just short 3 days on from their last outing.

This rescheduled meeting of the PMC Physiotherapy Division 9 league encounter was underway shortly after 8pm in a very well presented Paddy O’Brien Park.

It was the men from Brews Hill who registered the first point of the game coming from Ben Forde from a free. Curraha found their first white flag in the 9th minute when Brian Joyce won a fine O’Mahonys kickout and the ball found its way to Ruairí O’Sullivan who turned his man and slotted the ball over the bar off his right. O’Mahonys got a goal in the 10th minute coming from Evan Bird as well as a point from the O’Mahonys man in the 16th minute of play from a free to leave 4 between the teams. Some fine defending from Currahas full back line of Andrew Gough, Michael John Lavin and Mark Mahon kept O’Mahonys from further extending their lead. Curraha won a fine kickout in the 23rd minute and a long ball was sent into Ruairí O’Sullivan who was causing problems in the O’Mahonys defence and he popped over a further score off his right foot. Curraha piled the pressure on O’Mahonys and Ruairí O’Sullivan was on the scoreboard once again 3 minutes later with a further point to only leave 2 between the teams. Curraha put the move of the game together moments later with some fine quick passing between Kevin Doyle, Mylo Hussey and Brian Joyce resulting in Peter Sherlock receiving the ball off the shoulder and kicking a lovely score off his left foot. O’Mahonys finished the half with a score from Ben Forde in the 30th minute of the half.

HT score: Curraha 0-4   Navan O’Mahonys 1-3

Curraha made 3 halftime substitutions with Ben Heagney coming on for Shay O’Connor, Nick Dillion for Andrew Gough and Cian Heagney for Conor McAleese. If Curraha were looking for a perfect start to the second half well they couldn't have got a better one. A long ball was sent into the Navan O’Mahonys goal mouth and Kevin O’Connor won possession and drilled the ball to the back of the net after only 51 seconds to give Curraha the lead for the first time in the game. Currahas corner forward Mylo Hussey found the first orange flag of the night seconds later after he won the resulting kick out from the goal and kicked a massive 2 pointer. Currahas period of dominance continued and put the squeeze on O’Mahonys and Mylo Hussey followed up with a further point off his left to give the visitors a 4 point lead with only 2 minutes gone in the second half. Kevin Doyle got in on the action for Curraha, with another super move resulting in Doyle kicking a fine point off his right to further extend Currahas lead. O’Mahonys responded to Currahas blistering start to the second half with a 2 pointer of their own from Jack McConnell from a free. Ruairí O’Sullivan pushed Currahas lead back to 4 when he sent over a free in the 7th minute of the half. Mark Mahon came out of the Curraha defence with the ball and played the ball forward to PJ O'Reilly who’s shot dipped over the crossbar to extend their lead back to 5 with 20 minutes of play remaining. The second half was a much more lively affair and O’Mahonys got 2 quick fire scores one from Jack McConnell and one from Ciaran McGuinness. Ruairí O’Sullivan once again responded with a fine point from play to leave the deficit at 4 points. Navan O’Mahonys found a purple patch of their own like Curraha had done at the start of the second half and O’Mahonys hit 7 unanswered points 4 of which came from Jack McConnell 3 of which were frees to give the home side a 3 point lead with only 10 minutes remaining. Shay O’Connor came back on for PJ O'Reilly in the 21st minute for Curraha. Curraha didn't let this wave of O’Mahonys pressure stop them from getting back into the game and Ruairí O’Sullivan made it a 2 point game with a well worked point from play. Curraha made 2 final substitutions with Conor McAleese being reintroduced for Kevin O’Connor and Andrew Gough coming back on for Mark Mahon. Brian Joyce rose tallest and caught a massive kickout and was awarded a free. Joyce sent the ball into Ruairí O’Sullivan who shot and raised a white flag to only leave the minimum between the sides. Navan O’Mahonys found the back of the net moments later to leave it a 2 score game with minutes remaining. Curraha did finish the game the strongest and Mylo Hussey kicked 2 late scores 1 from a free to leave the Full time score: Curraha 1-15 Navan O’Mahonys 2-14

Another gutsy performance from Curraha who from number 1 to 15 as well as the players who came on left everything on the pitch but unfortunately came out on the wrong side of the scoreboard. Some brilliant performances from Curraha players as they continue to improve week on week and if they keep going in this trend will be on the right side of the results in their remaining fixtures in the league.
